ESSAY: From our discussion, what is your favorite line, shape and color? Explain briefly
what does each element mean or suggest for you.
LINE
Straight lines because there isn't a bit of complication in a straight line. Just like a simple
answer of yes or no a witness is asked to give in a court proceeding, there is little to
negotiate in a straight line, it starts here, goes straight and ends there.
SHAPE
Circle because it's just like the course of our lives just round and round
COLOR
Blue is my favorite color. Whenever I look at anything as long its blue, it soothes me.
Those negative thoughts in my mind instantly disappear.
Examine the artwork below. Analyze how the elements of art (line, shape and color) are
employed.
A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-dimensional
and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form.
Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin. They lead
your eye around the composition and can communicate information through their
character and direction. Shape has only height and width. Shape is usually, though not
always, defined by line, which can provide its contour. In this image, rectangles and
ovals dominate the composition Form has depth as well as width and height. Three-
dimensional form is the basis of painting arts Artists use color value to create different
moods. Dark colors in a composition suggest a lack of light, as in a night or interior
scene. Dark colors can often convey a sense of mystery or foreboding. Light colors
often describe a light source or light reflected within the composition. In this painting, the
dark colors suggest a night or interior scene. The artist used light colors to describe the
light created by the street light. Bright colors are undiluted and are often associated
with positive energy and heightened emotions.
