“It’s a good guess, Vasquez. When we
say MORBIDITY, it is a condition of
being ill, diseased, or unhealthy. This
can include acute illnesses (such as flu,
broken arm, and heart attack), as well
as chronic illnesses (diabetes and
cancer). The Morbidity Rate examines
how many people got a certain disease
in a specific geographical location
during a specific period.”

“Can a person live for several years “Yes Sir!”

with one or more morbidities?”

“Yes. A person can live for several years

with one or more morbidities, and that is
called COMORBIDITY.”

“How about mortality? Can you guess

what it is based on the pictures
presented, Magana?”

(Pictures Presented)

“Sir I think morbidity refers to being

dead.”
“It’s a good guess, Magana. When we
say MORTALITY, it is the condition of
being dead. The Mortality Rate
examines the number of deaths in a
population over time, either in general or
due to a specific cause.”

“Is there a connection between “I think, there is Sir. Because morbidity

morbidity and mortality?” which is illness or disease may lead to
mortality which is death.”
“Exactly!”

“They are connected because

morbidities may or may not lead to
mortality.”

“For instance, one could have terminal

lung cancer, but die of injuries after a
road accident.”

“Did you get it, class? Did you “Yes Sir!”

“The number one leading cause of

morbidity in the Philippines is ACUTE

About It?

“Now that you know that the leading

cause of morbidity and mortality in the
Philippines is Acute Respiratory Tract
Infection and Ischaemic Heart Disease,
Can you cite the possible reason why
most Filipinos are prone to have these
kinds of diseases? Can you think of
ways on how to prevent Acute
Respiratory Tract Infection and
Ischaemic Heart Disease in the near
future? Answers it in your activity
notebook.”
