IMMEDICATE EFFECTS
• Produces anxiety, tension, irritability, irrational behavior,
talkativeness, and loss of self-control.
• Results in loss of appetite and inability to sleep.
• Euphoria, elation.

LONG TERM EFFECTS
• Prolonged use or even a single exposure, especially if
administrated intravenously, can lead to manifestations of a
full blown “psychosis” which is similar to schizophrenia
characterized by the presence of paranoid delusions,
and visual hallucinations.

Gateway drugs are substances that,
when consumed, give way to harder,
more dangerous drugs.

DEPRESSANTS
Depressants are drugs that inhibit the
function of the central nervous system (CNS)
and are among the most widely used drugs
in the world. These drugs operate by
affecting neurons in the CNS

STIMULANTS
Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up
the messages between the brain and the
body. They can make a person feel more
awake, alert, confident or energetic.

NARCOTICS
A substance used to treat moderate
to severe pain

HALLUCINOGENS
are a class of drugs that cause
hallucinations—profound distortions in a
person’s perceptions of reality

INHALANTS
are various products easily bought and
found in the home or workplace—such as
spray paints, markers, glues, and cleaning
fluids. They contain dangerous substances
that have psychoactive (mind-altering)
properties when inhaled.
