Who We Are
Our Mission Statement:
 Working together with voluntary and statutory

services and stakeholders to improve the


quality of life for people affected by Sickle Cell
and Thalassaemia in the Sandwell area.
Our Office
The Team at OSCAR
 OSCAR Team – Directors and co-opted members,
Committee members, Staff (Rachel McFee, Lorna
Patterson, Khudeja Khanom, Abdul Alim, Latoya
Malcolm, Stan Simms and Mary Millard), we also
have support from Clients, Volunteers and Members
of the organisation.
WHAT WE DO
 OSCAR Services – advice and support to clients and
carers and the general public, information giving,
home visits and hospital visits, social events, referral
to other services, raising awareness about the
conditions and social research

 We are funded through SMBC, Sandwell Primary


Care Trust, other supporting charities, also our own
fund raising.
RECENT PAST
 From 2005-2008, we had two major pots of
funding, from New Deal for Communities and
The National Lottery.
 New Deal – locally targeted community
project, looking at health, EPP and Level
Advance.
 Lottery – nationally targeted project,
specifically targeting Thalassaemia patients,
family and carers
RECENT PAST cont’d
 Early 2009 – long term staff have left, long
term funding ended!!!
 April 2009 new staff, recession, only core
funding.
 Assess infrastructure and operational processes
etc. (top to bottom)
 Away Day, expenditure, activities, core work.

 Thalassaemia Talk at OSCAR
 Strollathon in Smethwick
 Attending conferences and forums in Leicester,
Manchester and London. (De Montfort Uni, Sickle
Cell Society, UKTS.
 IT training for clients, Summer Project, Christmas
Party.

update our client database, look towards
sustainability.
 New Development Worker in post, able to
visit clients at home. Support from Steve
Swoffer (Swoffer Media) and created an
Access database of our clients, to keep track of
support given.
