The Defence cape is a Cape of Accomplishment that players can purchase only when they've reached level 99 in the Defence skill. It can be bought from Harlan, the Melee combat tutor, for 99,000 coins from where he resides, close to the Lumbridge general store.

Like all skill capes, the Defence cape gives +9 to all defensive stats, and also a +4 bonus to prayer if it is trimmed, which requires a separate skill at level 99. The cape is automatically trimmed if this condition is met.

When the defence cape is equipped, players can enable the cape to act as a ring of life. Like the actual ring of life, this teleport works up to level 30 Wilderness. This option is toggle-able, and can be enabled/disabled by the player at any given time. When the effect occurs, the wearer will receive the message Your cape saves you.. Upon completion of the medium Ardougne diary, the respawn point of this effect can be toggled to Ardougne. However, an actual death will result in the player respawning to their respawn point.

This item can be stored in the cape rack of a costume room, as part of the Defence cape set, along with the hood. Ultimate Ironmen will be unable to retrieve individual pieces until the full set is stored.

As of 1 January 2025, there are 343,706 players that have achieved level 99 in Defence.

3 December 2015 (update | poll)	The "Toggle Effect" option was added, which makes the Defence cape act as a permanent Ring of Life when equipped. The "Toggle Respawn" option was added, allowing players to change the respawn point of this effect to Ardougne.
