Necrovarus is a ghostly priest, necromancer, and the creator of the Ectofuntus. He arrived in Port Phasmatys from the Eastern Lands.[1] He is the main antagonist in the Ghosts Ahoy quest.

Necrovarus also featured in the 2015 Halloween event, installing a copy of the Ectofuntus in the Underworld. He would also hand out his notebook on the mechanics of the Ectofuntus and prayer in general.

History[edit | edit source]

Necrovarus came from the Eastern Lands, but little else is known about his early history. In his youth he had begun studying necromancy, specialising in vessels[2]. He was at some point approached by Rasial, who made him one of his apprentices, learning necromancy from him.[3]

The Ectofuntus[edit | edit source]

At some point in recent history, when the vampyres of the Sanguinesti region rediscovered the settlements north of Mort Myre, they immediately imposed blood tithes on all the villages and lordships, including the thriving Port Phasmatys on the north-east coast. The residents' numbers dwindled as the blood tithes took their toll, at which point Necrovarus arrived from the east, claiming he had had a vision of a great power source to repel the vampyres.[4] He had the villagers delve beneath the port, and they discovered the large reservoir of ectoplasm, Rasial had spoken of, from which they built the Ectofuntus. This resulted in a magical barrier around the port, which Drakan and his vampyres were unable to cross, keeping them at bay.[5] During the artefact's construction, one of Necrovarus's disciples had turned against him before the project was finished, and fled.[6]

Although the Ectofuntus worked perfectly, it had a terrible side-effect; the townspeople gradually lost the will to live, and all of them eventually died - even Necrovarus himself perished in the end, though in his death throes, he asked Rasial for help, but when the necromancer paid him no heed, he realised that Rasial had deceived him and has loathed him ever since. The townspeople became ghosts and found themselves unable to pass into the afterlife, trapped by Necrovarus's powers, supplied by the Ectofuntus. Some townspeople accepted this fate while others ended up as tortured souls, haunting the vicinity of Port Phasmatys.[7] Necrovarus himself, now a ghost, ruled the town, aided by the Ectofuntus.

Endgame[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Ghosts Ahoy.

In 169 of the Fifth Age, one of the residents of Port Phasmatys, Velorina, enlisted an adventurer's help to stop Necrovarus's scheme. Upon finding out, the priest dismissed the possibility of danger and threatened the adventurer to stay away. However, they found the disciple that had run away, now an old woman, and with her help they were able to find and translate the book of Haricanto in order to enchant a ghostspeak amulet to be able to issue a single command to ghosts, after an unsuccessful attempt to diplomatically coerce him into allowing the townsfolk to pass on through a petition.

Using the enchanted amulet, the adventurer once more confronted Necrovarus, commanding him to let any soul who so wishes pass on to the Underworld, and he was forced to comply, surrendering to the adventurer when threatened with a worse fate. He remains at the Ectofuntus with his disciples today, but has little influence left in the town, although some of the ghosts still support him.

The following takes place during Vessel of the Harbinger.

During the Sixth Age, after Rasial made the World Guardian his final apprentice, they began training the skill so they could combat him to stop him from invading the human realms. After making some progress, Death told them about vessels and how necromancers made them to consolidate and grow their power. Having defeated him in the past, the World Guardian had forgotten about him until Death reminded him of them, as Necrovarus' vessel was the Ectofuntus itself, and suggested he go visit him to learn more about Rasial from him.

Returning to the Ectofuntus, the World Guardian asked Necrovarus for help, but he was still upset at them for foiling his plan for power until they mentioned Death. Learning that they had become an apprentice of Rasial and his plans, Necrovarus agreed to help under the condition that they help him in return. While he did not like to admit it, he told them that after the souls of Port Phasmatys were granted freedom, his vessel began surging with power. However, the tortured souls outside were preventing him from fully harnessing it, so he tasked them with collecting five of their souls and cleansing them. After doing so, Necrovarus explained to them that he was a budding necromancer when his talents were noted by Rasial, who told him of the ectoplasm beneath the port. After building his vessel, he soon discovered that his own life force was being drained, which should not have been the case, realising that Rasial had manipulated him all along.

Learning of the World Guardian's attempt to stop Rasial, Necrovarus told them that he would be able to perform a ritual to help strengthen the Well of Souls, but he needed the Book of Haricanto, which they had stolen from him to stop him at the time. Learning that Netty had died following their visit to her, they returned to Um where they reclaimed the book with her instructions. Necrovarus then told them to gather some ectoplasm before leaving for Um, where he and the World Guardian performed the ritual. Once they finished, Rasial teleported in, where he admitted that the Ectofuntus was simply a prototype to his own. He then threatened Necrovarus to not interfere with the tutelage of his apprentice, or he would take away his power out of spite before forcing him out of the Underworld, where he returned to the Ectofuntus. He asked the World Guardian to put Rasial in his place. After he was defeated by them, they could return to Necrovarus and inform him of Rasial's defeat, which he was pleased with, believing that his teachings contributed to their learning.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the Ghosts Ahoy quest, when using an enchanted ghostspeak amulet, one can command Necrovarus to do an impression of a chicken without discharging the amulet. In his impression he says "Cluck cluck squuuaaaakkkk cluck cluck" then "I think I've laid an egg..." Also using this amulet, he may be convinced to tell you a joke without losing a charge. The joke he replies is "Knock Knock, Who's there, Egbert, Egbert who?, Egbert no bacon".
  • Necrovarus' name comes from the Greek prefix necro-, meaning dead, and indeed may be a play on necrovirus.
  • Necrovarus' model is a translucent and slightly modified version of the model used by Polmafi Ferdygris.

  6. ^ Velorina, "Ghosts Ahoy", RuneScape. "During the building of the Ectofuntus one of Necrovarus's disciples spoke out against him. It is such a long time ago I cannot remember her name, although I knew her as a friend. She fled before the Ectofuntus took control over us, but being a disciple of Necrovarus she would have been privy to many of his darkest secrets."
  7. ^ Velorina, "Ghosts Ahoy", RuneScape. "Little by little, we began to lose any desire for food or water, and our desire for the Ectopower grew until it dominated our thoughts entirely. Our bodies shrivelled and, one by one, we died. The Ectofuntus and the power it emanates keeps us here as ghosts – some, like myself, content to remain in this world, some becoming tortured souls who we do not allow to pass our gates. We would be able to pass over into the next world but Necrovarus has used his power to create a psychic barrier, preventing us."
