The Spirit Beast is a creature encountered during the quests Spirit of Summer and Summer's End. It feeds on souls.
History[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
The Spirit Beast has been terrorising the towns and villages in the Wilderness for hundreds of years. The beast is the one spoken about in the Ruins while wearing the ghostspeak amulet, as voices of the weakened spirits have been occasionally heard in certain areas of the Wilderness.
The Spirit Beast is known to devour spirits of people (or any other creatures), making them weak and unable to communicate with the real realm of RuneScape. These spirits, once weakened, are unlike the usual ghosts in RuneScape, where they're barely coherent as even those who have the ability to speak with ghosts have difficulty understanding them. Wandering as helpless shadows trapped within the Spirit Realm, they are doomed to suffer in horrible agony for eternity, the beast slowly feeding upon their life force and imprisoning them within its domain.
The ghosts of Erik, Jallek and Meranek believe that originally, the Beast originally outright devoured all souls it stumbled into. Upon meeting the three and Summer Bonde, the Beast appeared to realise that they were coming from somewhere and began to slowly siphon their spiritual force, causing them to lose their memories and suffer in pain. It slowly gained power in the process and began to claw its way to the physical realm where the souls were coming from, although it made little progress as it was only draining from four weakened souls.
Human Intervention[edit | edit source]

However, Summer was able to enlist the help of an adventurer, as she was somehow able to escape the Spirit Realm and stumbled into the physical realm. A passing human adventurer found her near the Wilderness wall at Varrock's north gate and followed her. During this time, the adventurer managed to gain the trust of both Summer and her family, gradually restoring Summer's soul during the process. After fully restoring it, the adventurer learned of the Spirit Beast and worked with Summer to weaken it. While appearing to be successful, the other spirits chastised them, as it had managed to feed off their strong soul and become significantly stronger in the process. Just as Summer was handing a reward to them, the Beast broke out of its confinement.
Apparent Demise[edit | edit source]
The adventurer found Summer again, who took them to a void space. There, Erik, Jallek and Meranek explained to them that after the Spirit Beast had eaten parts of their soul, it had become strong to the point that it was trying to claw its way into the physical realm, doing so by force as it crashed through the realms and shoved them aside, leaving an empty void in its place. The adventurer, realising that the Beast would feed off everyone on Gielinor, worked with them to stop it before it could reach its final destination.
Following a plan made by the three men, the adventurer provided enough assistance to deceive and lure the beast while the spirits slowly hacked away at it while it was distracted. After a powerful blast of holy energy, the Beast was killed.
Corporeal Beast[edit | edit source]
As the Spirit Realm is the opposite of the physical realm, when the Spirit Beast was killed, this caused one to appear in Gielinor itself, known as the Corporeal Beast, which is a mid/high-level boss monster. However, it remained stuck inside the cave and unable to escape. While it retained the Spirit Beast's ability to drain its opponents to strengthen itself, it is also vulnerable to attacks, primarily those from spears.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- After Spirit of Summer, the Beast's appearance changes. It gains a red nose, underbelly, its spikes all over its body differ somewhat, and it gains a "claw" on its front foot, the one with only two mandibles. The differences can be seen in the infobox.
- During Summer's End, its long-ranged splash attacks has the appearance of a bright white "claw". This has a striking similarity to the icon used in the summoning left-click option interface. This relation is likely because the summoning skill involves familiars from the Spirit Plane and the Spirit Beast is from the Spirit Realm.
- As with the Corporeal Beast, attempting to run underneath the Spirit Beast will cause the player to be trampled, inflicting massive amounts of physical damage regardless of armour or defences.
