Ankou are undead monsters found on the fourth level of the Stronghold of Security and in the Wilderness Crater. They are described by the Slayer Master Vannaka as "neither skeleton nor ghost, but a combination of both."

Ankou are weak against Earth spells and the Salve amulet. In free worlds, they are often attacked because of their high experience yield and decent drops, although some players will kill them solely for their left skull half drops. In combat, ankou act similar to attackable human NPCs by punching their opponents.

The ankou is the only monster to drop the left skull half, a component needed to assemble the skull sceptre. Wearing Varrock armour while killing them increases the chance of receiving this component of the skull sceptre.

When killing ankou, an elite version may spawn (guaranteed while on a Slayer assignment), the chance of which can be further increased with the use of fellstalk incense sticks.

Prior to a hidden update in late 2024, Ankou could only drop ghost hunter equipment and Cremation in members' worlds. [1] They can now drop ghost hunter equipment and Cremation in F2P worlds.

Gem drop table[edit | edit source]

There is a 6/100 chance of rolling the gem drop table.

Gem and rare drop table
  1. ^ 50 coins replaces members-only drops in free-to-play.
  2. ^ Molten glass removed from the drop table with tier 2 luck.
  3. ^ Runite stone spirit removed from the drop table with tier 3 luck.
  4. ^ Raw lobster removed from the drop table with tier 4 luck.
  5. ^ Vecna skull requires tier 4 luck. Without it, coins are dropped instead.
  6. ^ Cheese+tom batta dropped only without tier 4 luck. Indicates a roll for Hazelmere's signet ring and Blurberry Special.
  7. ^ Blurberry Special requires tier 4 luck. Indicates a failed 1/10 roll for Hazelmere's signet ring.
  8. ^ Hazelmere's signet ring requires tier 4 luck.

Tertiary[edit | edit source]

  1. ^ Only dropped during a Slayer assignment given by the Raptor.
  2. ^ Only in the Stronghold of Security; wearing any level of Varrock armour significantly increases the drop rate.
  3. ^ The drop rate for ghostly essence is affected by the rooster perk in player-owned farm.

Universal drops[edit | edit source]

Universal drops are dropped by nearly every monster and skilling action outside of Daemonheim.
These items are dropped alongside main drops.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In Breton mythology, the ankou is a personification of death. The word ankou in the Breton language means Grim Reaper.
  • Although the examine info says, "A bony ghost." they do not count towards a Slayer assignment of ghosts. Instead, they are a Slayer task by themselves while also counting towards skeleton assignments.
  • They used to be located in the Forinthry Dungeon, but were replaced by dark beasts on 8 August 2016 as part of the Wilderness Improvements update.
  • Due to excessive botting, ankou had their health boosted. This led to player complaints as the ankou then had too many life points for low-levelled players. The boost was eventually reverted with the update on 17 October 2016.

They only drop Cremation/herb-burner/ghosthunter/essence on member worlds. The above ninja fix requested only ghosts, and ankou aren't classified as ghosts (they have a distinct Slayer category)."
