Learning LO 1 (A 6-5): demonstrate ways to receive and send a shuttle over a net.
Objective

LO 3 (D 6-3): demonstrate ability to follow safety procedures.
49 minute class: First 5 minutes to get changed and into squads. Last 4 minutes to get changed.

Introduction/Warm Up (10 mins) Assessments/

Learning Activities/Teaching Strategies (30 mins)


1. Badminton Overview (5 mins)
- Have students huddle up so everyone can hear. Comprehension of

- Have a student volunteer or myself walk around the outside of the

- Have students line up on the baseline and go through the different
swinging motions and the ready position.
- Transition: By squad number send groups to
grab equipment. One partner gets 2 rackets, the other partner
grabs the shuttle. Then they stand across from their partner
around the gymnasium on a court.

2. Serving Introduction (LO 1) (10-15 mins)


- Demonstrate the motions of a serve. The purpose is to work on
hand eye coordination of hitting the shuttle.
- Have students practice several serves without
the net or target in order to get the motion of drop and swing done
together.
- Serving Keys: Racket must remain below the
hips (under hand serve) Hold the shuttle out in front and lights
drop it to coincide with the racket swing.
- Students will move forward so everyone is
standing on the service line and now they will all serve across the
net altogether.
- Then we will all go grab the Pre-Assessment of overall
shuttle and serve back over the net. This is to get the badminton skills:
students used to net service.
Progression Partner Serving
- Students will serve to their partner; Let the
shuttle drop to ensure that it is going past the short service line.
- Underhand serve; hold the shuttle in front of
you and lightly release it and swing to make contact.
- Backhand serve; Your racket head and wrist
must remain below the waist. Same release for the service.

3. Racket Swings (10 mins)


- Ensure that you have enough space that you will not hit anyone
around you.
- Stance: Wide feet, bend your knees, ready position means racket
up!
- Students will serve to their partner who will return the birdie with
one stroke.
- Overhead shot: relate this to throwing a ball; Same steps and
motion.
- Ready Position; Step Back; Scratch your back;
Step through.
- This is our overhand clear and would be an
offensive play.
- Underhand shot: This would be a defensive shot.
- Still use the step through, though the racket
comes from below the waist.

4. Cooperative Rally (Pre-Assessment for Unit) (LO 1&2) (10 mins) Time
permitting
- Inform students that a cooperative rally is working with the
person on the other side of the net to keep the shuttle in the air.
- To start the rally they must work on the serve that we were just
practicing.
- Inform students at this time that the purpose of rallying today is to
see where they are at with their badminton skills as a pre-assessment and
since we have the whole gym today we will use all the space.

Closure/Cool Down (2mins)


Transition: Have students put rackets away and quickly huddle up. Thank them for
the first class at Lakie, give feedback on the lesson and send students to get
changed.
