A cat training medal is an item that players can obtain by having their cat or kitten catch 100 rats (hell-rats included), and then talking to Gertrude in Varrock. This item has no effect when worn, and is only for show. If players lose their training medal, they may talk to Gertrude to get another one. It may also be re-obtained from May's Quest Caravan quest item storage chest after putting 150 quest points into the Hub Track; due to a bug it may not be obtained from the chest for some players.[1]

Earning a cat training medal will complete the achievement Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, which is one of the medium Varrock achievements. If a player already has a cat training medal in their bank or in their inventory, they can get another medal and complete the achievement by dropping their medal and talking to Gertrude again.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

The cat must catch the rats before it turns into an overgrown cat, which cannot hunt vermin. (Alternatively, an overgrown cat can be trained into a wily cat, which does hunt vermin.) In order to claim the medal you have to speak to Gertrude before your cat turns into an overgrown cat otherwise she will not recognise that you have caught 100 rats. Players who only have these must buy another kitten from Gertrude, or those who have done the Rat Catchers quest can train their cat into a Wily one. Training overgrown cats into wily cats resets the mouse kill counter to zero, even if the counter was at 100 rats.

The best place to catch rats is in West Ardougne. On the west side of the city, players can enter a small house containing an anvil, where there should be two rats inside. The most effective strategy is to close the door, trapping the rats inside. The rats respawn very quickly and are confined to a small place, so there is a higher and faster chance of successful catches.

The house next to the general store where 2 rats are locked inside. The rats spawn fast enough that you don't need more rats

An alternative is the Hazeel Cult Hideout, beside the stairs which has 2 rats which respawn very quickly.

Another great place to train rat catching is in Evil Dave's basement which is located downstairs in the house to the west of the Edgeville bank (requires starting the Recipe for Disaster Evil Dave sub-quest for entry). Evil Dave's basement has a large number of hell-rats in a small basement that your cat is able to catch. If your kitten eats enough hell-rats then it turns into a hellcat unless you already have a hellcat in your bank. Even though your cat turns hellish it still counts towards the number of rats caught and if you want your hell cat to turn back into a regular cat, feed it a bucket of milk. This location has more rats and requires less movement compared to West Ardougne.

Another good place to train is on the lower level of the Lumbridge castle, near the base of the steps with the mind-rune respawn.

There are plenty of rats inside the entrance to the Varrock sewers, there are numerous rats constantly available and there is no need to wait for any respawn.

Kittens will seldom catch rats, which makes it more effective to wait until your kitten is grown into a cat before you try to catch rats.

When killing rats to get a medal, your character will congratulate your cat after 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kills, meaning you won't need to keep track of your kills. At 100, the player says: "incredible puss! That's 100 rodents caught!". Note that these prompts appear as dialogue boxes which you might miss while repeatedly interacting with your cat.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Prior to the advent of the Grand Exchange, these medals were tradeable.
  • A Jagex Moderator once made a sticky in the "Discontinued Items" section of the official forums and claimed that this item was no longer obtainable and it was then discontinued. This message read the following: "It is no longer possible to get these items which means they now belong in this forum. Edit* Also just to note, the medal doesn't do anything. It's just there to look good."
Merchants were paying up to 10,000,000 coins for the medal, but a few hours after it was posted, a different Jagex Moderator edited the post and said that it was a mistake.[source needed]
  • Tiadeche in Tai Bwo Wannai village wears a cat training medal.
