HILOT
- Art & Science of ancient Filipino Healing
HILOT WELLNESS
Composed of Massage, herbal treatment, oil/essences, mineral treatments.
The Philippines Hilot massage therapy is an ancient art of treatment using bare
hands and herbs. It is a part of a traditional ancient culture of Filipinos.
Pinoy Hilot was started in 1985 by Engr. Bibiano Fajardo also known as the Father of
Pinoy Hilot.
In 2005 in Singapore convention Dr. Galvez – Tan introduce the Banana Leaves

It’s promotes a philosophy that we need to introduce in our lives for a better understanding of the
deep connection between the universes. The universal law is an irrevocable rule that maintains the
divine order of everything in the universe from the orbits of planets in the solar system.
To the natural law, these balances and limits of living beings to prevent disorder and followed and
respected by the manghihilot and albularyo and consequently integrated into their community
through healing their fellow men. An albularyo is manifested as individual with internally
harmonious faculties, who have Achieved a high level of bance in his thinking, feeling and doing.
Hilot technology as a form of holistic healing reflects these properties. The main goal of hilot is for
man to be a constant equilibrium for himself, his surroundings and the whole of creation.

This includes not only the physical symptoms but also the way other factors such as lifestyle, diet,
and activity level relate back to the changes we are seeing in the body. When deciding how to treat a
client, therapists must focus on restoring balance to the system.
Gathering as much information as possible about the client so we can see how the body has changed
its function and work to correct the system.
The International Spa Association (ISPA) Education Committee developed the 10 Elements of the
Spa Experience. Their goal was ―to help define the elusive and ever changing nature of the spa
experience and to ―create a foundation, a common language, and career path for the emerging spa
professional. Many concepts, important to the practice of spa, emerge from the ISPA‘s dialog around
the 10 Elements image.
The most important perhaps is the idea of integration. Everything is connected. Feeling beautiful,
feeling joyous, feeling healthy, and feeling energetic are signs of a balanced life. A balanced life
requires both reflection and action. Spas provide a space where clients can experience each element
represented in the image and reflect on its presence or absence in their lives.
Movement and touch is an appreciation of beauty, it is also our connection to the environment, and
cultural expression, social contribution, the healing quality of water, and nourishment both of the
body and the soul are the essential concepts on which spa is founded.
The spa experience can be life changing. Far from being just a luxury, Spa therapy represents the
bold first step toward a better form of health care. Its future is in the hands of those dedicated
therapists and visionary spa owners who have the ability to provide space where clients can
experience balance and celebrate life while receiving exceptional care.
Thousands of years ago, people lived in a very close and interactive way with Nature. They were
affected by seasonal changes and whether much more than we are today. Day in and day out the
patterns of the seasons were observed and interactions between the elements were understood.
If there was a drought, there would be fire. Too much rain would bring flooding and dampness.
Springtime brought activity and planting; winter was a time to rest and reflect. In China, this
observation of the season and elements was also applied to our bodies and used as a way to heal
illness and understand health. This tradition views the world as being made up of Five elements.
These five elements (also known as the Five Phases) are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each
element has many associated qualities. Each element also has a season, color, taste and Yin/Yang
Organ Meridian pair that reflect some of those qualities. The Control Cycle balances the Creation
Cycle by inhibiting or suppressing the energy of the elements connected by lines to make a five-
pointed star.
METAL controls WOOD by cutting it.
WOOD controls Earth by holding it in place with roots.
EARTH controls WATER by containing and absorbing it.
WATER controls FIRE by extinguishing it.
FIRE controls METAL be melting it.
Bio-energies/from: These elements of the body have a natural balance, which must be kept within a certain
range for the individual to be in a state of health.
Earth - Flesh – Bones
Water - Blood - Body Fluid
Fire - Energy - Metabolism
Air - Air - Breath
Universe -Environment
The training of Hilot Practitioners or the “Manghihilot” involves the learning concepts and
philosophy of traditional healing, instilling individual valuing process and its relevance to Hilot
learning and understanding the body functions. A good healer can tell if the elements in one’s body –
fire, water, air and earth are in harmony.
The following are the general principles observed by our folk system of medicine in understanding
health and illness. It is important that manghihilot knows the valuing process in healing since
balancing the four elements.
A. Nature. A Filipino traditional medicine believes that time and condition of nature greatly
influence the health of the person. To remain healthy, one must learn to abide by the law of nature or
at least know how to deal with the changes in the weather condition that can affect his health.
B. Hot and Cold Syndrome adversely affects one’s health. Illness is caused by hot or cold elements
that enter the body through the pores of the skin, food consumed, air or vapour inhaled that cause
imbalance or disequilibrium inside the body.
C. Discomfort or ailments caused by supernatural elements. Such as usog, nalamang lupa, nabarang,
naengkanto, nagaway and etc.
The “manghihilot” is holistic. Holistic involving the biological, social, behavioural, and
psychological aspects of life and living.
