CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Health, Physical Education, and Wellness (HOPE) is a fundamental component of the K-
12 curriculum in the Philippines, aiming to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values
necessary for a healthy and active lifestyle. However, traditional teaching methods often fall
short in engaging students and providing relevant, real-world experiences (Alcantara & Cruz,
2018).
The education in physical education, especially at the senior high school level, plays a
significant role in developing the holistic well-being of students; that is physical, mental, and
social. HOPE 1 curriculum is designed to promote fitness and health awareness, which are
essential in this era of predominant sedentary lifestyles. Unfortunately, traditional teaching in
physical education may not engage today’s tech-savvy learners necessitating new ways of
teaching integrating technology, and contextualizing the learning process.
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on digital learning as a means to
enhance educational outcomes. Digitized learning materials offer the potential to provide
students with more interactive, engaging, and personalized learning experiences (Mayer, 2009).
Additionally, contextualized learning can help students connect classroom knowledge to real-
world situations, making learning more meaningful and relevant (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking,
1999).
With all these concerns and drawbacks, the use of digitized and contextualized teaching
techniques and the creation of interactive supplemental educational resources for Physical
Education topics are seen to be an effective way to introduce and demonstrate challenging P.E.
subjects or concepts. Consequently, this research thoroughly examined the narratives of the
participants to recognize potential themes about the difficulties or issues that certain teachers
face. The coping strategies of school administrators, parents, and students' methods and
preferences for learning methods, perspectives on contextualization, and subject classification for
the HOPE curriculum.
This study aimed to apply learning materials using proven effective learning strategies
according to learners’ background, profile, and pace. The design of this digitized and
contextualized instructional material was to be utilized beyond one classroom, which was shared
with others who needed it. The priority of the educational system should be to create an
environment for innovators and educational entrepreneurs who can integrate globally successful
instructional models (Naz & Murad, 2017). In addition, the innovative learning materials needed
to be utilized and should be modified according to the pace and needs of the students (Naz &
Murad, 2017). Health Optimizing Physical Education (HOPE 1) should thus use teaching
methodologies that meet the local context in terms of content as well as cultural relevance (Jolly
2009). Moreover, in contextualization, a teacher might set up for their students an impediment
where they are required to manipulate theory or information independently to connect it
appropriately to their understanding.
