The following guide provides efficient methods for training Crafting from level 1 to 99, taking into consideration both cost and time. It is a skill with a variety of ways of obtaining experience, and with each method at a different rate and with different costs, the skill can be trained either very quickly at great expense (for example with leatherworking) or more slowly at a profit (for example with urns). This guide is intended for players who are members, though it includes some relevant methods that are also available for free-to-play players.

Locations for training

Most methods of training rely on having a bank nearby.

Non-Ironman Mode players should make use of portable crafters as often as possible. They function as a potter's wheel, pottery oven, and tannery, offer a 10% increased base experience, and a chance to save clay, leather, and gems when crafting. They can often be found on the dedicated "Portable Skilling" server, world 84, near the Lumbridge Market or in Fort Forinthry.

Spinning wheels

  • A convenient spinning wheel is on the 1st floor[UK]2nd floor[US] of Lumbridge Castle with a bank directly above it on the next floor.
  • Neitiznot houses a spinning wheel just south-east of the bank, though the isle requires the player to at least start The Fremennik Isles quest. That means at least level 46 Crafting is required for this spinning wheel (boosts cannot be used).
  • There's a spinning wheel in Seers' Village just south-west of the bank.
  • There are two spinning wheels located in Burthorpe south of the gnome banker and Mistress Fara. They can be found just outside of the cow pen.
  • There is a spinning wheel in the Ranger's Workroom in Fort Forinthry, right next to a bank chest. Available after partially completing Dead and Buried.

Looms

Pottery ovens and potter's wheel

Both pottery ovens and wheels are used in the creation of urns and other clay products. Note that a portable crafter can function as both a wheel and an oven, which may save a lot of time as it can be placed immediately next to a bank. Players who do not need to bank can find a full list of wheels and ovens on their respective pages.

However among the full list, some notable fixed locations with both a potter's wheel and oven which are also close to banks include the following:

  • In Burthorpe they can both be found south of the bank; this is near the smithing furnace and west of the druid circle.
  • South-east of Varrock's East Bank inside the gated and fenced area.
  • On the ground floor[UK]1st floor[US] of the Crafting Guild, which is itself close to a bank chest outside in the clan camp (note entering the guild requires 40 Crafting).
  • Within the Menaphos Worker district. Completion of The Jack of Spades is required to access Menaphos and rank 6 reputation within the Worker district is required to use the bank chest.
  • Very close to the bank chest in the Ithell district of Prifddinas. This is the fastest method; however, access to the city requires the completion of the Plague's End quest and thus level 75 Crafting (among many other requirements).

Tannery

Tanneries can be used by players who wish to tan their own leather. They can be found in a few locations:

  • Portable crafter (the cost is same as regular tanner).
  • A tanner can be found just South of the Varrock West bank.
  • One resides on the 1st floor[UK]2nd floor[US] of the Crafting Guild.
  • Tanya Hyde can be found in the cow pen to the north of Taverley and will tan hides for the player.
  • A tanner lives in a house just a stone's throw North of the Al Kharid bank.
  • The closest tanner to a bank resides in the Ithell district of Prifddinas; however, as mentioned above, this requires completion of the Plague's End quest and thus level 75 Crafting (among many other requirements).

Furnace

Furnaces are used in the production of jewellery. The most efficient way to create jewellery is to fill the metal bank with gold bars and have the inventory filled with the gems needed to create the jewellery.

Several furnaces exist within a short range of a bank:

Training methods overview

Crafting offers a wide range of training methods with various cost and experience rates.

Method Description Base XP per hour Viable levels
Crafting urns Turn soft clay into urns on a potter's wheel or portable crafter, then fire them at a pottery oven or portable crafter. Slow but generally cheap or even profitable. TBD 1–99 Crafting
Crafting jewellery Turn gold bars and cut gems into necklaces, rings, amulets, and bracelets. Slow but generally profitable with medium and high level jewellery. TBD 1–99 Crafting
Cutting gems Cut uncut gems. Very fast experience rates but with a high upfront cost. 200,000 to 550,000 20–99 Crafting
Crafting dragonhide armour Turn dragon leather into pieces of dragonhide armour. Fast experience rates with a high upfront cost, but can easily break even or be profitable. 300,000 to 450,000 40–99 Crafting
Crafting battlestaves Combine battlestaves with elemental orbs. 220,000 to 302,500 54–99 Crafting

Advice for Ironmen

Ironmen should begin the first few levels of training with picking flax in Taverley and turning those into bow strings on the provided spinning wheel there for their use in Fletching later and after that try to focus on techniques such as crafting urns (especially after 40 when the Crafting guild becomes available; don't forget to use runes to stack urns to save time otherwise spent in banking trips) or perhaps tanning dragonhide or other leather-making techniques.

Although a mining rework has been done that has increased gem outputs, to purely focus on experience gained from making jewellery may not be as practical as it is for regular players, due to the absence of the ability to trade on the Grand Exchange.

However, mining from uncommon gem rocks is viable with high Mining levels and a gem bag. With the Crafting Guild update and completion of Family Crest, silver and gold ores may be directly deposited into the furnace in the guild. Jewellery may be crafted for enchanting, high alching, sign of the porter, or Invention after it's unlocked.

Mining rare gems is rather slow at level 85 Mining and is not recommended to farm for maximum experience gains.

Levels 1-46+

Molten glass can be made in a furnace using a bucket of sand and soda ash (obtained by cooking seaweed on a range or in a fire). Molten glass can then be made into several useful items with a glassblowing pipe (tool belt will work). Training this way is a good strategy for going from level 1-30 as glasswork offers decent experience rates.

Starting at level 46 Crafting, making orbs via glassblowing is an excellent method of training, granting 52.5 experience per orb and on average around 91,000 with no interruption and possibly up to 120,000 experience per hour. Molten glass can be bought for 347 each, and unpowered orbs sell back for 123. Powering orbs is a good way of earning money as the charged orbs fetch much higher prices (air: 775, water: 241, earth: 100, fire: 112).

At lvl 54, depending on GE prices, players might want to switch to making bomb vials, granting slightly higher xp per hour than orbs, as bomb vials are worth 1,743.

Players who have completed the quest The Hand in the Sand can obtain 84 buckets of sand per day from Bert. Seaweed can either be purchased from the Grand Exchange or from Arhein in Catherby. Players with level 77 Magic who have completed the Lunar Diplomacy quest can use the Superglass Make spell, which can substitute soda ash with raw seaweed or swamp weed as well as producing about 30% more glass for free.

Level 1-77+

Pottery and jewellery - slow but cheap

Note: The table below assumes the player purchases soft clay from the Grand Exchange. Players can make their own by using clay on a water source, earning 842 (and one Crafting experience) per clay, thus saving 1,684 per urn. Players can also mine their own clay, which would save 2,574 per clay or 5,148 per urn.

New players can also make bowstrings from flax as these offer a bit of money as well as slow Crafting experience.

Consider the cost of obtaining resources when using the methods below as prices change over time. A calculator with the prices, experience, and gp/xp rates can be found here. A similar calculator containing all items of jewellery up to and including onyx can be found here. Note that all price calculations are based on buying and selling resources and products at current Grand Exchange rates.

Enchanting jewellery

Players who are making jewellery should consider enchanting their items as well. Several items (such as the games necklace, ring of duelling, and the amulet of glory) are significantly more valuable after being enchanted, as well as granting some Magic experience.

Signs of the Porter

Alternatively, necklaces up to dragonstone can be converted into Signs of the porter if you have the Divination levels and energies to make them. While not tradeable, these can be used for training Gathering skills such as Archaeology more efficiently.

Level 20+

Fast and expensive - cutting gems

Cutting gems is a fast and expensive way of training Crafting. Gems are mostly obtained by mining gem rocks, opening geodes obtained from mining, and from monster drops. However, most players training Crafting will find it more convenient to buy them directly from the Grand Exchange. For a full list of methods on how to obtain gems, see Gem#Obtaining gems.

Below are tables showing experience rates for the different types of gems. All experience per hour is an estimate and assumes 4,000 gems are cut per hour.

Recommended gems

The following gems have a buy limit of 5,000 every four hours on the Grand Exchange and are traded in very high amounts, making them readily available and a reliable training option.

Other gems

Opal, jade, and red topaz have a significant chance to break when being cut, increasing the cost and reducing the overall experience they give. It's recommended to use another method of training instead below level 20 Crafting, such as creating bowstrings from flax.

Moonstone, onyx, and hydrix have a buy limit of only 100 every four hours on the Grand Exchange and are traded in fairly low amount, making them hard to acquire. They also generally have a very high upfront cost compared to other gems.

Slow but free - crafting spider silk

High level players like to farm corpse spiders for invention components using the Scavenging perk. These players usually leave lots of spider silk and thread on the ground. Using area loot, it's easy to pick up the thread and spider silk, craft it into armour, and either drop it on the ground or disassemble it if you have Invention unlocked.

Alternatively, you can kill them yourself for some combat experience and a chance at spider egg (unchecked) drops. A bonecrusher is recommended if you are going to kill the spiders yourself, as it removes the bones from the loot piles and buries them for you.

Level 40+

Dragonhide armour - fast and profitable

Dragonhide armour is crafted from dragon leather, requiring a needle (tool belt will work), and thread. Dragonhide armour offers high experience rates (typically at least 300,000 per hour), though with a higher upfront cost when buying the materials required. With the use of bank presets, up to 1,600 bodies or shields can be made in an hour. Using a yak can increase this to 1,800 per hour.

For players with level 55 Magic, it is possible to cast High Level Alchemy on the dragonhide armour. This saves a substantial amount of money in the long run, whilst also granting Magic experience.

Battlestaves - fast, but requires stockpiling

Crafting elemental battlestaves provides fast experience for its level at a moderate to high cost, though the Grand Exchange can make this method somewhat slower by limiting the purchase of staves to only 1,000 every four hours (see below for tips on acquiring battlestaves). Assuming the player has the battlestaves and charged orbs ready, it is possible to craft around 2,600 elemental staves an hour using bank presets.

Unpowered orbs can be made by hand using glassblowing (see below) and then charged, though most players prefer to skip this stage and purchase charged orbs from the Grand Exchange to save time. If a player wishes to stockpile orbs before they can craft the staves, they can make molten glass and blow it into an unpowered orb for a total of 52.5 experience per orb, requiring 46 Crafting. Note that charging the orbs can be very tedious as the obelisks are difficult to get to.

Alternative methods of gaining experience

Dungeoneering - Level 9+

Crafting protoleather bodies in Daemonheim from five protomastyx hides will yield 99.5 experience each. Protomastyx hides can be obtained by hunting Protomastyx, or bought from the Smuggler for 420 coins. A completed body fetches a return of 420 coins when sold to the Smuggler, making it possible to buy more hides and craft additional bodies.

Weaving (Clan Citadel)

Training on the loom in a Clan Citadel (tier 5 or higher) is both free and relatively quick, although it requires active clicking to move between the remaining hotspots and restart the collection action. The experience scales to the players level (see this article for more details), with higher levels achieving around 120,000 experience per hour for a total of about 200,000 experience each week (assuming the player has achieved a fealty of 3). The experience rate is slightly more than half of that of the battlestaff method. The player can complete their cap every build tick (once a week). Players who have completed over 50% of their cap can also claim some bonus experience from the Quartermaster, which can go towards any of the skills available in the citadel; a player with level 99 Crafting can claim 55,226 bonus experience for doing this.

There is also the Clan cloak fealty reward, although most prefer to use this on harder to obtain skills.

Grinding sandstone with Telekinetic Grind

Similar to the Money Making Method, depending on how fast the player is, over 400,000 Crafting experience can be attained in an hour. The player needs completion of Lunar Diplomacy and level 85 Magic to cast Telekinetic Grind. Due to the amount of sandstone that can be processed in an hour, the player is advised to buy the sandstone from other players, or buy a lot of sandstone before starting the training method. It is worth noting that the method is very click intenstive, without any afk time.

Depending on the pricing of sandstone and extra fine sand, a nice profit can be turned on top of a good amount of Crafting and Magic experience.

Playing harps - Level 75+

Playing the harps located within the Ithell district in Prifddinas offers moderate rates (about 50,000 experience per hour as well as a little construction experience) with little attention required. Level 75 Crafting is required to play the harps, and the Plague's End quest is required to access the city. Playing the harps will yield small amounts of harmonic dust, which is used to craft crystal tools and equipment. Harps will gradually fall out of tune in increments of 10%, granting only half the harmonic dust at 50% and becoming totally unplayable at 100%; the harp can be tuned again at any time, granting 50 construction experience for every 10% tuned.

Red and crystal sandstone - Level 89+

Players who have level 81 Mining can mine up to 50 blocks of red sandstone a day from the Oo'glog red sandstone and a further 25 from the Sophanem red sandstone after completing the elite Desert achievements. The red sandstone can then be made into robust glass (there is no requirement for this step as it grants no experience) on a robust glass machine. Players with level 89 Crafting can then blow the glass into potion flasks, granting 100 experience per flask. This is also a good source of money, since each flask sells for 12,810 on the Grand Exchange.

Players with level 81 Mining who have completed the Plague's End quest can mine up to 50 crystal-flecked sandstone each day in the Ithell crystal sandstone mine in the Ithell district of Prifddinas. They are crafted in an identical fashion to regular flasks and give 150 experience each. Crafting Crystal glass or Robust glass requires the completion of the quest As a First Resort. Crafting in Ithell when the Voice of Seren is active will grant 20% more base Crafting XP from crafting crystal flasks. Players with level 115 Dungeoneering can mine an extra 25 per day in the Edimmu resource dungeon. While they offer more experience than regular flasks, they are considerably lower in price at 1,455 each.

Players often keep the molten glass until Double XP to maximise the experience gained. However, this is not recommended due to other methods such as black dragonhide shields being much faster.

Player-owned port - Level 90+

While this is not a consistent method of training, players who have acquired Lacquer from voyages can craft both tradeable and untradeable tier-85 ranged armour, yielding 10,000 experience for the hood, 20,000 for the legs, and 30,000 for the body. Players can also make a Reefwalker's cape and a Leviathan ring from koi scales and pearls respectively, each granting 10,000 experience. Note that this experience is gained in the normal way, so things like bonus experience, skill outfits, the wisdom aura, and other such items will increase the experience gained. Both superior and regular gear grant the same experience, and the tradeable armour is also an excellent source of money. Since it has a high XP rate with strictly limited inputs, it is an excellent candidate for double XP events.

Gate of Elidinis (Skilling Boss)

After completing Ode of the Devourer, players have access to the Gate of Elidinis boss encounter. Players can focus purely on gathering moonstone fragments for Crafting experience. Position yourself at either of the southern moonstone rocks near the entrance to remain out of range of the telegraphed attacks. Simply gather the moonstone fragments, ignoring the mechanics and feline akhs that appear. With sufficient damage reduction and healing, encounters should easily last 2 minutes 40 seconds. However using the recommended setup below, one can survive in the encounter until the boss reaches max health (about 3 minutes 30 seconds), yielding over 300k experience per hour at level 99. Alternatively, fully repairing the moonstone conduit allows you the full time without any setup or gear requirements.
