Soul Reaper, also known as Boss Slayer or Reaper Task, is a daily activity released on 18 August 2014, although it is possible to unlock the ability to participate in the activity multiple times a day.

It involves the player helping Death harvest the souls of various boss monsters, as, in Death's words, there is an imbalance in the harmony of life and death — specifically, there is too much life. Death tasks players with "reaping" various boss monsters in special assignments, which reward Slayer experience and reaper points that can be spent for various items and effects at Death's Store, including hydrix gems, a new title, and a set of cosmetic gear.

Getting a task[edit | edit source]

To start the activity, the player must visit Death's office via a portal next to the Draynor lodestone. The player can then speak to Death to obtain a grim gem and get assigned their first task. A task may be rerolled up to five times per day, but doing so reduces the point rewards by 25% for each reroll, excluding the first reroll. Since the introduction of the skilling boss Croesus, there is no minimum combat level required to receive a task.

A task can be cancelled for free if the player does not complete the task by 00:00 UTC, if they go to Death. If this is done via gem, it will take a few days, and the first reroll will be consumed. One task can be obtained for free daily. The only way to get more than one task a day is by purchasing the "Additional Tasks" from the rewards, which costs 250 Slayer Points to get a new task. The option to purchase additional tasks with Slayer Points may be unlocked by paying 150 Reaper Points, an effective cost of up to 28,701,599 gp. When buying a new task, players will get the option to reroll up to 5 times, just like the daily reset task. If this option is pursued, it is recommended to have a large quantity of slayer points on hand due to the immense cost of obtaining numerous reaper assignments.

It is possible to complete three free tasks in one day, if the player is running late on their daily. To do this, the player must have a task from two days before reset, but log in any time before reset. The player can then finish the task from two days ago, without logging out claim their free task of the day before reset (can be claimed even after 00:00 UTC as long as they did not log out or lobby), and finish that one, and then relog finally to claim the task from the day after reset and complete that one too.

After the first task, further ones can be obtained by using the grim gem, which acts similarly to the enchanted gems for standard slayer, making travelling back to his office unnecessary apart from collecting rewards.

Frank filling in for Death

As Death is kidnapped by Sliske during the events of Missing, Presumed Death, his clanmate Frank fulfils his role in the activity for him for the duration of the quest.

By unlocking the Reaper's Choice perk (250 reaper points), there is a 10% chance that Death will allow the player to pick a boss of their choice, rather than assigning a random boss. It is possible to carry over a Reaper's Choice from one day to another by not selecting an option when prompted, even if it's a reroll. Then, after reset, the Reaper's Choice prompt will re-appear as the player's first roll.

Assignments[edit | edit source]

Death (or Frank) may assign the following bosses, with numbers depending on the difficulty of the boss, as long as the player meets all the requirements.

In the Slayer section of Settings under Skills & Experience, players can toggle:

  1. Enabling group bosses (the Ambassador, the Barrows: Rise of the Six, black stone dragon, Kalphite King, Nakatra, Devourer Eternal, Nex, Nex: Angel of Death, Seiryu, the Azure Serpent, Solak, Vorago, and Zamorak, Lord of Chaos) as possible assignments;
  2. Enabling skilling bosses (Croesus and the Gate of Elidinis) as possible assignments;
  3. Extending the amount of bosses. This simply doubles the amount that is normally assigned.

Selecting either group bosses or extended tasks increases the number of reaper points rewarded for all tasks by 25%, even for solo boss assignments when group assignments are enabled. Selecting both options increases the number of reaper points rewarded by roughly 50% (the bonus points for both +25% are rounded down before adding to base, example: 23 to 28 to 33 or 10 to 12 to 14). Players can toggle these options only when they are not on an assignment. It is recommended to toggle both options, especially if the player can find a team for group bosses where needed. Otherwise, they can be safely skipped for another assignment with maximum point potential.

Unlike normal slayer:

  • Players do not receive Slayer experience for every boss killed. It is instead awarded at the end of the assignment.
  • Players only need to deal a small amount of damage to a boss for it to count for the task, as opposed to the majority of it.
  • The usual bonuses from the slayer helmet do not work on Soul Reaper tasks, unless the player has a regular slayer assignment for the same monster.

After each kill, the player is notified how much they have left for the task. Upon completing the task, the player is awarded with a hefty sum of Slayer experience and some reaper points. Every 10 tasks completed awards an additional 10 points, while every 50 tasks completed awards an extra 50 points. The higher point rewards override lesser ones; at 100 tasks completed, the player would get an extra 50 points instead of 60.

Bosses that possess a harder variant, such as hard or challenge mode (not successors, like Nex: Angel of Death), provide additional slayer experience and reaper points. However, all of the kills must be done on said mode.

If a deathtouched dart is used to collect a soul, the kill will not count towards the task, as it does not register on the Beasts tab. This effect will also persist for 15 minutes after throwing the dart, so don't kill the assigned boss right away after a dart has been thrown.

While on a Reaper assignment, custom-fit trimmed masterwork armour will not degrade until the task is completed.

Bosses[edit | edit source]

  1. ^ Base experience without Reaper Scroll unlocked. Slayer experience reward is affected by bonus experience.
  2. ^ These are the base values; the amount can be lower depending on how many times the player re-rolls a task. The amount of points is increased by 25% (rounded down) if group bosses are enabled and by a further 25% if extended tasks are enabled.
  3. ^ Assuming that the points are spent for an incomplete hydrix and based on the reaper points awarded to the left. Does not factor in various costs, e.g. instance and gear. Value of 191,344 coins per point.
  4. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s Hard/challenge mode counts and awards additional points and experience, but only if all kills were made in hard mode.
  5. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k May be toggled off along with the other "group bosses", although enabling them gives additional points and experience rewards from all tasks.
  6. ^ Killing all six original brothers counts as one kill for Soul Reaper. Akrisae the Doomed and Linza the Disgraced do not need to be killed.
  7. ^ The kill is registered when all of the brothers (except Akrisae and Linza) are killed and the chest is looted. Therefore, the player cannot simply kill six brothers if the task is to kill six; the player must instead kill all of them and loot the chest six times.
  8. ^ It is not necessary to kill all three Kings for each kill.
  9. ^ TzekHaar-Aken counts.
  10. ^ Exiled Kalphite Queen counts.
  11. ^ a b Requires completion of Gielinor's Most Expensive Doorstop to select with Reaper's choice.
  12. ^ TokHaar and TzekHaar-Jad count.

Rewards[edit | edit source]

Players can access the reward shop, Death's Store, only by speaking with him in person. It is not accessible via the grim gem.

In addition to Slayer experience, players also are rewarded with reaper points, which are used to purchase items and effects. Most of these can also be purchased with 250 slayer points. There are also cosmetic rewards that are unlocked by completing certain objectives. Unlocking all permanent effects is a requirement for the trimmed completionist cape. The Final Boss title is not required for the trimmed completionist cape.

It is possible to obtain Crabbe, the Slayer pet when completing an assignment and receiving Slayer experience.

Each reaper point is worth 191,344 coins, based on the median GE price of an incomplete hydrix (or 71,460 coins based on death notes). Since some rewards can be purchased with either reaper points or slayer points, one of those two options will usually be cheaper because of the different opportunity costs. The value of a slayer point (based on the value of Slayer Dart runes) is 2,164 coins, so for example the bonfire upgrade effectively costs 47,835,998 coins if purchased with reaper points, and only 5,410,714 coins if purchased with slayer points.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Reaper points obtained by completing assignments received a 50% bonus after the release of War's Retreat on 27 January 2020 until the end of 9 February 2020.
    • This was notified with the login message War's recent return has inspired Death to reward 50% bonus reaper points. Be sure to visit War in his new retreat near the Draynor lodestone! on 28 January 2020.
    • When points were obtained, the following message was shown: War's recent return inspires Death to reward 50% bonus reaper points.
  • This happened again when the Alchemical hydrix was released on 17 August 2020 until the end of 31 August 2020.
    • This was notified with the login and reward message: The Alchemical Hydrix rewards have inspired Death to reward 50% bonus reaper points.
  • From 10 February 2020 the player was able to be assigned the non-final boss of Elite Dungeons as reaper assignments. Although these tasks provided descriptions from Death, it was confirmed to be a bug.[2] They gave the same number of reaper points as the final boss would and were not included in the Reaper's choice list. This was later fixed in an update on 17 February 2020.
  • The Arch-Glacor used to award the same points and experience as in normal mode even if the task is fully completed in hard mode. This was quickly changed in an unknown update.
