Scutarii are slayer creatures, requiring 81 Slayer to kill. Described as a 'shielder', it is a member of the Order of Ascension.

These monsters are found in the Monastery of Ascension, located in the Feldip Hills just west of the Oo'glog lodestone, along with GladiiCapsarii and Rorarii.

They are significantly stronger than their fellow common members, which in turn means they have a fairly generous drop table and an increased drop rate of Ascension keystones.

They also feature in Nomad's Elegy together with the other Ascension creatures.

Locations[edit | edit source]

Mechanics[edit | edit source]

The arms of the Scutarii have been heavily warped, with each one forming one "half" of a shield, and they always keep the shield in front of them. The unusually dense crystal also causes all combat damage dealt by the player to be reduced by 90%. Only familiar, poison and the Bombardment ability deals full damage when attacking a Scutarii head-on. In order to deal full damage otherwise, they must be attacked directly or within 45 degrees from their back - any other angle will result in reduced damage.

The most common method is to stun and move behind them before attacking and killing them. The abilities Demoralise and Rout will automatically force Scutarii to turn around unless it was in a position that would not cause them to do so; however, Binding Shot and Tight Bindings will require the player to move behind them for full damage. A more intensive method is to stand next to the Scutarii, use an ability, and then run behind it before the damage registers.

When stunned, Scutarii become permanently bound onto the spot and face in the direction they were stunned towards as an indicator for their weak spot. Sometimes the Scutarii will not face the right direction, which can cause it to deceive the player by making them attack from a wrong angle, but this may be due to the player running too fast as they were bound. Though Scutarii are not offensively powerful, they possess higher defence than the Legiones due to their lower ranged affinity. As such, it's generally not recommended to kill them without tier 90 or higher weaponry, as tier 80 can miss fairly often, even when boosted. With the correct weapons, a slayer task, a ranging boost and Anguish, 100% accuracy can be achieved.

Scutarii are often found in pairs, though there are occasional outliers of a single spawn scattered around the dungeon, and most of them are typically found near Capsarii. There are a few lone exceptions to this, with three Scutarii outside Legio Primus' chamber and five in the agility section of the dungeon, both of which are free of other members. There is also a group of four right outside the laboratories of Legio Quartus, Legio Quintus and Legio Sextus, albeit with one Capsarii spawn between them.

Update history[edit | edit source]

This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included – see here for how to help out!
  • patch 9 June 2014 (Update):
    • Ascension creatures will no longer occasionally have text displaying their weakness as Magic.
  • patch 17 December 2013 (Update):
    • Creatures in the Ascension dungeon will now display the correct weakness icon.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • This monster's name comes from the Latin word for 'shield-bearer', bearing similarities to this monster's appearance.
  • This monster and the other monsters in the dungeon are the first to have a weakness to a generic attack style (in this case, Ranged). These weaknesses were previously restricted to players.
  • If stunned, Scutarii are still able to attack a player even though they do not turn around, making it look as if it was attacking at the air.
  • If a Scutarius is stunned, and then the stun effect wears off, even if the player is under the Scutarius, it will not move from the spot it was stunned in. This might be an oversight or glitch.
  • Scutarii have two different appearances; one with a crystal mask enveloping the face, and another with the crystal mask enveloping the face but having the beard exposed.
    • There was a bug in which the bearded model would never be used in the monastery if the spawn was killed too much, which would only cause all future spawns to use the unbearded model. This was fixed in a hidden update.
  • There is a bug where if they are placed in the Sunken Pyramid, they will randomly despawn during combat or generate random ascension members in its place.
  • Even though the seren godbow's special attack has the player fire up into the air with arrows falling above their target, it will still deal reduced damage unless struck from behind.
