Onyx dragons are high-level Slayer monsters requiring level 98 Slayer to kill. They are part of the gemstone dragon group, and are the second strongest dragon of this type.

A total of six onyx dragons are located in the gemstone cavern under the Shilo Village mine. They require the completion of the hard Karamja achievements in order to access them in the gem rock cavern underneath. In order to pass the barrier to confront them, players are also required to sacrifice a number of uncut dragonstone, uncut onyx, or uncut hydrix gems - with each gem type allowing the player to kill a certain number of dragons within their respective chamber; up to a limit of storing 60,000 kills at a time.

If the player is on a Slayer task for gemstone dragons, however, they may enter the gemstone cavern without the need for charges, and, if the player has already donated gems for charges, the charges will not be consumed while on-task. No fees are required to kill the onyx dragons in the Wilderness.

Strategies[edit | edit source]

Onyx dragons attack primarily with magic, although they will use both magic and melee if within melee range in addition to the regular dragonfire attack.

Onyx dragons periodically use a special attack which steals some of the player's life points and heals the dragon for 5,000 life points. The attack is signified by black spikes moving towards the player's location. When the spikes reach their destination, they erupt in a 3 by 3 area of effect (AoE). Moving out of this area before the spikes erupt negates the effect of this attack. They will only use this special attack against targets outside of their melee range.

Resonance may be used to heal from their special attack, but the attack will still heal the dragon. Of all the gemstone dragons' special attacks, this attack's effect is the least punishing, so it may be safer to do so with these dragons. Beware that overuse of Resonance to block the special attack over the course of the task results in having to deal a lot more damage to complete it. Similarly, Devotion may be used with Protect / Deflect Magic to block the attack's damage, but this does not prevent the attack from healing the dragon.

If the dragon dies before the special attack hits, the attack deals no damage.

It is possible to kill onyx dragons with an aggression potion active and while not paying attention to the possible special attacks rather safely by placing an onyx dragon soul in their own Slayer dungeon and standing on top of the dragon's spawn point. This makes it likely that the dragon targets the player before it gets out of melee distance, and thus prevents it from using its special attacks.

Main drops[edit | edit source]

Players will receive two drops from the main drop table each kill.

  1. ^ Only drops when not on a Slayer task.
  2. ^ a b 1/2,000 chance during a Slayer assignment; 1/5,000 chance otherwise. This drop rate is per kill and not per loot pile.

Tertiary drops[edit | edit source]

  1. ^ Only dropped during a Slayer assignment given by the Raptor or when using Gemstone Dragon Wildcards or Slayer Wildcards.

Rare drop table[edit | edit source]

This entity rolls the rare drop table.
Luck-enhancing items are not required to access the table, but they will increase the chance of accessing the rare drop table and may also improve the loot received from it.

Rare drop table
  1. ^ Molten glass removed from the drop table with tier 2 luck.
  2. ^ Runite stone spirit removed from the drop table with tier 3 luck.
  3. ^ Raw lobster removed from the drop table with tier 4 luck.
  4. ^ Vecna skull requires tier 4 luck. Without it, coins are dropped instead.
  5. ^ Cheese+tom batta dropped only without tier 4 luck. Indicates a roll for either Hazelmere's signet ring or a Blurberry Special.
  6. ^ Blurberry Special requires tier 4 luck. Indicates a failed 1/10 roll for Hazelmere's signet ring.
  7. ^ Hazelmere's signet ring requires tier 4 luck.

Wilderness drop table[edit | edit source]

This monster has access to the Wilderness shared loot table, which is a tertiary drop. To access the table, it has to be killed inside the Wilderness.
Luck-enhancing items are not required to access the table, but do increase the chance of doing so, as does doing higher-level content.
