King Roald Remanis III, more commonly known simply as King Roald, is the current ruler of the prosperous kingdom of Misthalin. His residence is within Varrock Palace, where the Varrock Palace Secret Guard work to keep him safe. He is located in the south-east side of the Palace on the ground floor[UK]1st floor[US].

He is involved in a number of quests, namely Shield of Arrav, Priest in Peril, Garden of Tranquillity, The Darkness of Hallowvale, What Lies Below, All Fired Up and Defender of Varrock. During What Lies Below, a mind controlled version of him serves as the final boss of the quest.

When doing a treasure trail, you may have to talk to him to obtain a challenge scroll. He is referred to as "lark in dog." He asks how many bookcases are in Varrock Castle's library, and the answer is 24.

History[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

A statue of one of Roald or one of his predecessors that was formerly found at the Warriors' Guild

King Roald is the son of King Roald II, a monarch most famous for his efforts to reclaim the Shield of Arrav from the Phoenix Gang. Although little is currently known of King Roald's early history, he is known to have had a pampered upbringing, learning to read from the Palace's librarian, Reldo.

Roald became king of Misthalin some time after year 143 of the Fifth Age, which is the last known date his father was king. The Census of Varrock from Year 160 states his profession to be 'Our glorious king', and Roald was not married when the Census was written. In fact no Ellamaria appears in the whole census, implying she did not live in Varrock before then. Roald is said by Phileas to be "a good friend" of Duke Horacio, but is not a member of the Secret Council of Gielinor.

Lady Elizabeth was revealed in the Return to Canifis novel as a woman that King Roald was engaged to be wed. She was also the first victim of the Wyrd. After witnessing her murder first hand during a hunting trip, King Roald never truly recovered, his anger only fueling his hatred towards the evils of Morytania. He hid her murder from his people, informing them she had passed away from an unspecified illness, possibly the plague. It wasn't until the people of Varrock demanded he hold parliament with them about the recent Wyrd attacks that had been covered up by the Society of Owls that he told his people of her true fate.

Several Woes[edit | edit source]

His first true wife, Ellamaria started off as a mere peasant. She too lost family to the Wyrd, and appeared to Sir Theodore several times, harassing him about allowing the Society of Owls to cover up the Wyrd's attacks. At the Midsummer's Eve Festival, Sir Theodore recognises Ellamaria, dressed in attire outside her class, approaching the King, whereby he orders her to be detained, believing her to be a threat. When the King holds parliament with the people to discuss the recent Wyrd attacks, she is brought forward as a representative of the people of Varrock due to her peasant status. Eventually, after Ebenezer falls ill to the Wyrd attack, it is revealed that Ellamaria had been set free, and sometimes tended to Ebenezer whilst he slept. During these times, it is also revealed that King Roald often visited to check on Ebenezer's condition, although many suspected it was purely to see Ellamaria.

During the times of uncertainty, Roald hosted feasts, angering Ellamaria to the point that she decided to sneak into one of them to publicly humiliate him. The guards tried to throw her out, but Roald stated otherwise and listened to her woes. When she finished, he asked her what he could do right, which meant a lot to her and it was the first time someone had challenged him. Ultimately, to ensure that Ellamaria could protect the people in her own way, Roald touted the creation of the identity known as The Raptor, which she also accepted. While he did not like having to be away from her, they both knew that it was necessary to maintain peace.

During the Return to Canifis novel, it is revealed that one of King Roald's ancestors, Tenebra, the eldest of The Five Princes of Misthalin was still alive, now as a Vampyre Lord. As such, it is his son, Gar'rth's birthright to reclaim the throne of Misthalin. However, Tenebra was later killed with the help of the Sunspear by Kara-Meir and Gar'rth was later exiled from the kingdom, leaving the throne once again fully in Roald's hands.

Misthalin's Affairs[edit | edit source]

There are certain groups that feel Roald is weak in the face of the Church of Saradomin, and others that would go so far as to see him assassinated. His hesitance in matters such as the recent conflicts with Morytania have earned him many enemies.

In the year 169 of the Fifth Age, Roald has found himself under numerous situations during his rule, doing the best he can to keep Misthalin prosperous. During this time, he oversaw the renovation of the Varrock Museum, the opening of the Grand Exchange, Misthalin Training Centre of Excellence and incorporation of Edgeville into Misthalin territory. This in turn brought additional visitors and revenue to the kingdom.

Possessed[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during What Lies Below.

The VSPG (Varrock Secret Police Guard) had been investigating Surok Magis and had him placed under house arrest after learning he intended to use a spell to mind-control Roald to rule Misthalin. The adventurer brought the required items to Surok, who was then able to make Roald do his bidding. Fortunately, the head of the VSPG, Rat Burgiss, convinced the adventurer to help save Roald. The adventurer confronted Surok, who then cast the spell on Roald, who was passing by. The adventurer defended themselves from Roald's attacks, weakening him enough before calling Zaff to undo Surok's spell over Roald, saving him.

Morytania's Threat[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Priest in Peril.

Roald asked the adventurer to bring him the current status of Drezel, a good friend and monk who is the caretaker of the Paterdomus temple. When they arrived, Drezel asked them to kill Cerberus, the guard dog in the temple's basement. Unaware that the temple had been taken over by a joint group of Saradominists and Zamorakians, the adventurer slew the dog and returned to Roald, who was enraged by the news. He threatened to execute them, but showed mercy and allowed them to fix their error, which they were able to do. Roald then had the dog Lycurgus sent to the temple after the situation is cleared.

Setting Up the Beacon Network[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during All Fired Up.

Due to Varrock's close position to both the Wilderness and Morytania, lands full of evil, Roald oversaw the construction of a Beacon Network. When the adventurer returned, Roald sent them to the two beacons near the Paterdomus temple, tended to by Blaze Sharpeye and Squire Fyre. The two beacon tenders asked the adventurer to help them verify the sight of the beacons, which was successful. They reported the success to Roald, who was pleased with the results and gave them some rewards in gratitude.

This in turn unlocks the minigame where Roald asks the adventurer to help maintain the fourteen beacons, rewarding them with the ring of fire, flame gloves and inferno adze in return for having six, ten and all fourteen beacons up simultaneously.

The Breached River[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Darkness of Hallowvale.

The same adventurer spotted werewolves across the River Salve in Misthalin territory, though they were discovered and knocked out. One of the werewolves suggested taking them, but another refused as it would be too suspicious, instead opting to take another human they had hidden behind the bush. After regaining consciousness, the adventurer returned to Roald and informed him of the dire revelation. Roald was shocked to see that the river's barrier was breached, but not wanting to break the Edicts of Guthix, instead activated the Mercenary Protocol to allow mercenaries to take on Morytania's threats should they desire.

Attack on Varrock[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Defender of Varrock.

During Zemouregal's attack on Varrock, the adventurer brought the shield of Arrav to Roald. They told him that they believed he was a descendant of one of the Elders of Varrock, which Roald was confident he was, only to use the shield and nothing interesting happened from it.

Roald's beacon network also proved instrumental in saving countless lives during the attack.

Vampyric Invasion[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Lord of Vampyrium.

After the adventurer watched Vanescula kill Safalaan after killing Lord Drakan, Vanescula states that she could invade Misthalin as Icyene blood flows through her, which would allow them to live as they did during the time of the Zarosian Empire. After reporting the incident to Drezel, the monk suggested to inform Roald of the events. Initially delighted that Drakan is no more, he becomes upset after hearing the vyres could breach the Salve and invade Misthalin. Roald becomes more concerned after hearing from both his advisor and the adventurer about werewolves crossing the Salve and the Saradominist/Zamorakian splinter group.

The following takes place during River of Blood.

As a result of Morytania's looming threat against Misthalin, Roald decides to discard the rules set by the Edicts, refusing to let the vampyres subjugate his people. He marshals an army to defend the kingdom, but sends the adventurer, Aeonisig, Rovin and his accompanying guards to the Paterdomus temple to assist in defence. The adventurer manages to strengthen the Salve, preventing the vampyre army from crossing over, forcing Vanescula into a treaty after being pressured by Efaritay and Safalaan in the process. Roald's scouts bring the news to him, where he expresses doubts about the alliance, but is content that his kingdom is safe.

Tired of Aeonisig's "arrogance" towards him, Roald sent him to Morytania as an ambassador. Roald had Aeonisig bargain with the Meiyerditch civilians for supplies in return for shipments of blisterwood weaponry so Varrock could defend themselves from the vampyres if the alliance did not work. He also became concerned with the werewolf population, seeing that they could still cross the Salve and had declared independence from vampyre rule.

More Defences[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during New Foundations.

Following the banishment of the gods from Gielinor, Roald decided to reclaim the land that made up the former Lumber Yard to further defend the human kingdoms of Misthalin, as both Asgarnia and Kandarin could not provide much support to them due to the unrest brought about by the changes in the planet's anima. Misthalin, most notably Roald's domain of Varrock, was right next to the Wilderness, where Zamorak's followers had fled to and was worried that they would soon reorganise themselves after their civil war and focus on the human kingdoms again.

However, the land that Roald intended to construct a fort with was infested with zombies. Despite hiring many mercenaries to help clear the area, they could not do so and others refused, believing the land to be cursed. Ellamaria wanted to clear it herself, but Roald refused, as he did not have troops to spare defending the cities.

The Adventurer, who stumbled into their conversation, agreed to clear the zombies from the vale, of which Roald would reward them with the land and a noble title of their own. He could not offer much else given the circumstances. While clearing the vale, they found a survivor of the previous team, Bill, convincing him to help build the fort. Finding their own staff, the World Guardian was successful in constructing a fort, which they named Fort Forinthry.

The following takes place during Murder on the Border.

He would later attend a celebratory banquet following the fort's construction per noble tradition. On the way, they were beset by Zamorakian cultists which his guards managed to repel. When they arrived, they had their banquet, only for one of the attendees, Duke Hoarse, die from poisoning. This resulted in a lockdown of the fort to find the suspect, with Roald stating that an attack on a duke was akin to attacking the kingdom itself. During the investigation, the Adventurer was beset by an assassin but slew them, finding more notes about the plot. Using their skills, the Fort's Duke discovered that the suspect was Bianca, who held a grudge against Ellamaria and others who abused their standing. Roald declared that she had committed treason, though he stopped his wife from killing her, as he wanted her to face trial.

The following takes place during Battle of Forinthry.

Zemouregal soon attacked Fort Forinthry with his undead forces, but they were ultimately repelled by the adventurer and Ellamaria (as the Raptor). Upon learning that the battle concluded and the road to the fort was safe, he attended a victory feast alongside his wife, thanking the adventurer for their efforts.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Ellamaria and King Roald use the pet names 'Ellie' and 'Rollie' for each other, as per dialogue in Garden of Tranquillity.
  • King Roald mentions Kara-Meir if you talk to him. He says she made an unwise choice in withholding important information about a friend. He is presumably talking about the novel Return to Canifis.
  • King Roald is somewhat shorter than player characters, as well as Ellamaria.
  • King Roald's chat head wears a similarly shaped crown as Queen Ellamaria even though they are not the same shape.
  • After Mod Timbo removed a tree near the Varrock West Bank, players petitioned for the tree to return. A sapling was planted at the location of the former tree, with a fence and a signpost near it. Examining the post will say "Protected by order of King Roald."
  • His outfit for Murder on the Border is based on Forinthry Royal Knight Armour.
  • In Runescape Classic King Roald's examine text calls him King Roald VIII, this was retconned by the release of RuneScape 2 in 2004.
