Lava strykewyrms are strykewyrms found in the Wilderness, south of the Lava Maze, residing in level 34-41 Wilderness. They require level 94 Slayer to kill and can be assigned by Kuradal, Morvran, Mandrith, or Laniakea. They are a reincarnation of the original WildyWyrms.

Lava strykewyrms can drop wyrm spikes, scalps and hearts, which can be used with abyssal whips, dark bows, or staves of light respectively to create the lava whip, strykebow, and the staff of darkness. Killing them when they are not your current Slayer assignment greatly reduces the chances of obtaining the wyrm components. They also drop searing ashes, which give 200 Prayer experience upon scattering, and are also used to create Aggression potions.

If the player is killing lava strykewyrms for a Slayer assignment then they can gain 20% additional Slayer experience by equipping a demonic skull. They can gain another 20% extra experience per kill if they accept a special slayer contract from Erskine while assigned lava strykewyrms as a Slayer task. These experience bonuses are multiplicative with one another, meaning the player may gain 44% extra Slayer experience when benefitting from both. Completing a special slayer contract rewards the player with a choice of coins or combat experience.

Killing lava strykewyrms can be extremely profitable, as their ashes are currently worth 41,679 coins each due to their high demand for prayer training and use in aggression potions and aggroverloads. Outside of the ashes and unique drops, lava strykewyrms also have a generous drop table. Though be wary, as they are located in moderately deep Wilderness.

If players are unwilling to kill lava strykewyrms in the Wilderness, they may choose to do so at the Dragonkin Laboratory; however, these are far weaker than the overworld variant and an entirely different drop table that does not have any of the wyrm's unique drops.

Lava strykewyrms cannot be placed in the Sunken Pyramid - attempting to do so will state that it requires a volcanic environment to survive.

    • ninja 2 March 2015 (Update):
      • Anticipation and Freedom now prevents lava strykewyrms from dragging the player towards them.
      • Lava strykewyrms now drop new level 85 wild arrows to pair with a strykebow.
      • Players can now retaliate instantly against another player while fighting a strykewyrm. The strykewyrm will also stop attacking.
      • Lava strykewyrms now give more Slayer experience per kill.
      • Searing ashes now grant 200xp when scattered.
      • The Wildywyrm's chance of spawning has been greatly increased.

    Trivia[edit | edit source]

    • Lava strykewyrms were originally supposed to be placed between the Lava Maze and Red Dragon Isle, but they were eventually moved south-west of the Lava Maze following complaints about being in a deep multi-combat area and near a potentially active Wilderness Warbands camp.
    • Initially, lava strykewyrms gave 1,404 Slayer experience per kill when assigned for a task. This was changed due to player complaints on the dangers of the Wilderness, their damaging attacks and the 50% damage reduction for 10 seconds at the beginning of the fight (which was also later removed), and they now give more Slayer experience than combat experience.
    • There was a glitch where if a player was assigned lava strykewyrms, even though the Slayer master said "lava strykewyrms", players who quickchatted/blocked the task said "WildyWyrms" instead. This has since been fixed.
    • Prior to the Patch Notes on 2 March 2015, a player in combat with a lava strykewyrm would be unable to retaliate if attacked by another player. Additionally, neither Anticipate nor Freedom would be able to prevent the pull of a lava strykewyrm's burrow attack.
    • Sometimes, a glitch can occur where the wyrm will stop attacking the player for a few seconds. This is due to the lava strykewyrm attempting to use its burrow attack but unable to as the player is too far to be dragged/the strykewyrm cannot burst from that location.
    • As of 1 February 2018, the highest kill count for this monster was 29,997 kills.[4] This had not increased by 6 May 2018.[5]
    • Unlike other strykewyrms, lava strykewyrms do not appear as a yellow dots on the minimap in their mound form.
    • Interestingly, while a wyrm is attempting to burrow underneath the player, it displays a weakness to crush despite being unable to be attacked during this attack.
