Slayer experience is gained when players kill monsters of Slayer assignments that were assigned to them in varying amounts by a Slayer Master. To get started, players should get assignments from the highest accessible levelled Slayer Master, since higher levelled Slayer Masters assign monsters that provide better experience rates, loot and more Slayer points.

General information

Access to masters

Generally speaking, you should obtain Slayer assignments from the Slayer Master that your combat level and Slayer level allow. Slaying the monsters assigned by higher-level Slayer master usually give more Slayer experience, although this is not always the case while advancing from Slayer level 1 to 120. The player can access better Slayer masters, this does not directly translate to more experience per hour. Maximising experience per hour is not simply about accepting assignments from the highest-level Slayer master currently available to the player.

The players have higher Slayer level and combat level can access more Slayer Masters, allowing them to choose the Slayer Master who suit their preferences, because different Slayer Masters have their own set of Slayer assignment. Each Slayer Master assigns Slayer assignments based on task weightings, which determines the chance the player is likely to get a specific assignment. Some Slayer assignments are shared among multiple Slayer Masters, but they may have different quantity range or task weighting.

Some players train Slayer using only one master. However, players typically train Slayer by switching between two masters. They do this by using one specific Slayer master that is appropriate for (or lower than) their level, and then switch to using a different higher-levelled Slayer master in order to take advantage of completion milestones.

Every 10th and 50th task, players earn 5 and 15 times the Slayer Master's standard amount of Slayer points. It is possible to complete the first 9 assignments with a low-level master and then switch to a higher-level master for the comparatively larger bonus. Higher-levelled masters will assign more difficult tasks than the typical Slayer Master would, either in monster assigned or quantity given, but the reward is a greater bonus of Slayer points.

Tasks assigned by Turael/Spria do not award Slayer points nor do they count towards the Slayer task count. Changing a task with Turael or Spria will reset the task count to zero, and therefore require the player to complete another four assignments to start receiving points again.

Upon completing tasks assigned by Mandrith, the player will be awarded a Wilderness slayer chest. Without dying, killing outside the Wilderness, or skipping tasks, the player will also be awarded one Reaper point.

Requirements or quests for accessing different Slayer masters and areas include:

Using Slayer points

Slayer points are used to purchase various rewards from any of the Slayer Masters. It is highly recommended to complete the Smoking Kills quest as soon as possible to receive full Slayer points from assignments and challenges. Players who have not completed the quest will only receive half of the Slayer points per task.

When training Slayer for better experience rate, this is generally an optimal order for spending Slayer reward points:

  • Blocking assignments
  • Slayer helmet unlocking and upgrades
  • Preferring or extending assignments
  • Extra unlocks (such as rings of slaying)
  • Enabling the assignments of certain Slayer monsters

Cancelling and blocking assignments

Slayer assignments can be blocked at any Slayer Master for 100 slayer points; this requires the player's current assignment be the creatures they wish to block. Up to eight assigned monsters, or group of monsters such as grotworms or mutated jadinkos, can be blocked in this manner, with one block allowed every 50 quest points.

Cancelling the assignment costs 30 points. The monster must be the currently assigned task for it to be cancelled. In order to maximise efficiency, players should cancel tasks which are commonly assigned yet offer slow rates of Slayer experience, often due to issues such as the inability to use a cannon and/or a titan, low life points, or other factors, such as long animations or specialised killing methods. Please see the assignment summary section below to determine which tasks should be considered for the use of a block.

Players are recommended to use the cancel option as often as it can be used while maintaining a stable level of Slayer points. This will ensure that the player spends as much time as possible doing tasks which offer fast Slayer experience.

The task summary section of this guide will tell you which tasks to block, which to skip, and which to complete if you are running low on Slayer points. For example, a player who is running low on points may do a greater demon task even though these tasks are usually cancelled. These tasks also give out more ferocious rings if done in Kuradal's Dungeon.

If a toggleable task is on that the player does not wish to do, toggle the task off, as it is essentially a pseudo-block.

Extending assignments

Some assignments can be extended for Slayer points, which will greatly increase the number that you can slay if they give you that creature for a task. Only extend tasks that you generally do; it is a waste of points if you extend a task that you skip frequently or do not like.

Notable rewards

Reward Cost Reason
Learn how to craft rings of slaying 300 Various teleport locations reduce downtime between tasks.
Learn how to deliver killing blows quicker 400 Tasks such as gargoyles will not be slowed down from need to manually kill each gargoyle when they are at low health.
A legendary pet with the Slayer Finisher ability may be used until this is unlocked.
Learn how to craft Slayer helmets 400 Slayer helmet is the most important piece of equipment.
Learn how to fuse rings to full Slayer helmets 500 Ferocious rings fused into helmets work at Kuradal's Dungeon, allowing a player to wear a ring whilst still benefiting from the damage boost of the ferocious ring.
Full slayer helmet upgrades 2,100 Increases the effectiveness of Slayer helmet. 4 upgrades.
Learn to move the souls in your personal slayer dungeon 1,000 Personal slayer dungeon would be one of the best source of Slayer monsters
Ushabti 20 Consumable, used to fill the Slayer Codex or take to the personal slayer dungeon

Other rewards are either quality of life improvements, unnecessary task unlocks or general consumables.

Tool belt

Players can add many Slayer items to their tool belt, such as a rock hammer and some special items (charming imp, bonecrusher, herbicide, seedicide, advanced gold accumulator). The latter items require 500 slayer points each to be able to be added to the tool belt.

Enabling the assignments

Assignments Cost Reason
Nightmare creatures 50 Nightmare creatures provide great Slayer XP rate.
Glacors 50 One of the slayer monsters to kill for profit.
Nihil 50 Summoning ingredients (aviansie talons, demon horn, vampyre fangs, icyene feather) for nihil familiar pouches are unique drops from nihils.

Combat equipment

General equipment

In general, use the best equipment available for the fastest rates. Additionally, power armour is more useful than tank armour. If available, always wear augmented gear when training Slayer.

Full slayer helmet variants are best-in-slot for any assignments. Before consuming the ensouled spectral lens, the helmet only boosts Melee, Ranged, and Magic attacks. After the helmet consumes the power of ensouled spectral lens, which makes the slayer helmet variants provide extra boost to Necromancy attacks, the slayer helmet would be the most suitable head slot equipment. After the slayer helmet stand is available and the helmet is placed there, it can be replaced by any power armour.

Cinderbane gloves are best-in-slot hand slot equipment for poisonable monsters. Most of the Slayer monsters are not immune to poison. The gloves can used with any weapon poison variants to amplify the poison damage. Otherwise, any power armour should be a replacement.

A demon horn necklace and its lesser variants in combination with a bonecrusher are best-in-slot neck slot equipment for slaying monsters that drop bones. The necklace restores prayer points when burying certain bones. In conjunction with an attuned ectoplasmator instead of bonecrusher, which monsters drop demonic ashes or are ghosts, the combination can quickly restore prayer points also, so that the players can keep prayers much longer without extra prayer restoration. After completing the quest Pieces of Hate, the holy wrench in the backpack or being worn boosts the amount of prayer points restored, but it occupies a backpack space or pocket slot.

A blood amulet of fury is great for recovering life points when slaying the monsters which do not drop bones and demonic ashes, or are not ghosts.

Luck rings are generally the best to use, as they offer bonuses to all combat styles, and increase the chance of getting a rare drop table drop or unique slayer monster drops.

The vampyrism aura and penance aura are ideal to use for low-intensity Slayer, by restoring life points and prayer points, respectively. The inspiration aura is an alternative choice on the assignments using with large area-of-effect abilities. The berserker aura, reckless aura, and maniacal aura would be backup options, they provides a overall damage boost to melee, ranged, and magic attacks but reduces the player's damage reduction. Hence, players will need more food to slay the monsters which deal high damage.

For all combat styles, two-handed weapons are preferred, as almost all area-of-effect abilities can be cast with two-handed weapons. For melee, halberd-type weapons are particularly effective for its area-of-effect damage potential. For ranged, chinchompas, especially mechanised chinchompa, are particularly effective for its area-of-effect mechanics, when used in combat, it deals damage to all opponents in a 3x3 area around your target.

Items that are not available in the section below should be replaced by lower-level items, preferring damage bonuses over tank bonuses.

Recommended equipment

Players should always use the style that their slayer assignment is weak to, with some exceptions which will be detailed in the slayer table.

Always use the highest level Slayer helmet that you have. Alternatively store it on the slayer helmet stand and then use any helmet you wish.

Some monsters are also susceptible to various weapons for additional damage and accuracy:

Notes

Slayer helmet

The most essential piece of gear is the slayer helmet and its variants. It provides a 7.5-9.5% increase to damage and 12.5-14.5% increase to accuracy when slaying monsters on-task and incorporates all slayer headgear effects, including spiny helmet, face mask, earmuffs, nose peg.

Maximum of 5 fully charged ring of slaying and 6 fully charged ferocious rings can be stored in the slayer helmets with 60 Crafting and unlocking the ability for 500 Slayer points.

All slayer helmets can be stored on the slayer helmet stand in Anachronia base camp, granting its on-task damage and accuracy boost as a passive effect, allowing players to wear any style specific helmet. Ring of slaying and ferocious ring effects do not work with the helmet on the stand.

Learn how to fuse rings to full Slayer helmets 500 Slayer points Level 60 Crafting and the quest Smoking Kills is required for this. Once purchased, this ability can add up to five fully charged rings of slaying (40 teleports) and up to six fully charged ferocious rings (30 teleports) to any full slayer helmet variant to gain access to their teleports.
Slayer helmet stand Tier 3 Slayer Lodge Grants passive slayer helmet bonuses across the game without needing to wear it when a helmet is placed on the stand.
Recoloured slayer helmets 4,000 Loyalty Points Once purchased, its permanently unlocked and the player can swap between uncoloured, red, blue, green, or yellow. This is purely cosmetic and applicable to all versions of the full slayer helmet and above.

Cannons

A cannon is another incredibly useful piece of equipment, which is often used to speed up tasks. The "Restocking Cannon" perk purchased from the Artisans' Workshop Reward Shop with 100 respect (with 150 extra in the upgrade progress) is quite essential to reduce the effort to maintain the cannons. The dwarf multicannon and kinetic cyclone are the Ranged and Melee variant of the cannons respectively. The Oldak coil is a Magic variant which is further recommended to be used instead of the dwarf multicannon, if possible.

Unlocking the dwarf multicannon, kinetic cyclone, and Oldak coil upgrade kits can permanently increase their damage output by 100%, 50%, and 50% respectively.

These are incredibly useful for dark beast and edimmu assignments, as they constantly cycle aggression towards the player whenever they are hit. Most tasks can generally be completed within the duration of the cannon (25 minutes), and even then maintenance is fairly low if it runs out of cannonballs, with a simple click to get it back up and running again. Some areas will prohibit the use of these cannons, so aggression potions should be used in their place if necessary.

Perks

Any perks that increase damage output is beneficial while slaying monsters. The perks shown in the table below are specifically useful for Slayer. Scavenging is arguably the best perk for Slayer and should be prioritised.

Summoning familiars

There are 3 categories for Summoning familiars that would assist in high-level slayer tasks—Combat, Beasts of Burden, and Healers.

Use of combat familiars like nihil (87 Summoning) or steel titans (99 Summoning) can increase your experience rates. Nihils are only needed for particularly troublesome tasks such as airuts and Kal'gerion demons, who possess high defence and low affinity values, as even the best equipment can still miss relatively often without resorting to an accuracy aura. Otherwise, steel titans should be used, as most monsters don't possess fairly high defence levels or low affinity values that would make it troublesome for their accuracy.

Beast of Burden familiars may be used at tasks where the additional inventory can prove helpful, such as ripper demons and camel warriors. Otherwise, magic notepaper should be used to cert drops from monsters such as airuts. Pack yaks are incredibly useful for most slayer tasks due to their ability to bank up to 240 items per hour, and adding 30 spaces to the player's inventory to fill with extra supplies and carry loot.

Commonly used Beasts of Burden
Familiar Summoning requirement Inventory slots Duration (mins)
RuneScape inventory image of Spirit terrorbird pouch 52 12 36
RuneScape inventory image of War tortoise pouch 67 18 43
RuneScape inventory image of Pack yak pouch 96 30 64

Legendary pets are by far the best option for those who want to make some money off of slayer without hindering their experience rates much. These pets have 3 incredibly useful abilities: Scavenge, Beast of Burden, and Slayer Finisher. The Scavenge ability picks up items after killing enemies with a 10-15 second cooldown. The second ability makes it act as a Beast of Burden when a pouch is used on the familiar. The third ability is for Nechryael tasks for automatic kills if quick kills is not unlocked.

For most assignments, it is the most beneficial to use a Beasts of Burden, for its ability to store valuable loot, and withdraw food and prayer potions, effectively extending trips before needing to restock. Higher level Beasts of Burden last longer and have more inventory slots.

When extra inventory slots are not needed, healing familiars, e.g. bunyip (68 Summoning) and unicorn stallion (88 Summoning) or combat familiars, e.g. Ripper Demon (96 Summoning) and steel titan (99 Summoning) can be used instead.

Quick ways of recharging summoning points include the tribute stone near the Falador lodestone, and the Altar of War in War's Retreat.

Prayers

You should always use Turmoil/Anguish/Torment to increase your kills per hour. If you can afford them, Malevolence/Desolation/Affliction should be used as they provide greater bonuses. Soul Split, whether constantly active or via prayer flicking, will serve as the "food" for a majority of tasks, negating the need to bring actual food, though a few should be taken for emergencies.

For some tasks, notably dragons, you can use a bonecrusher in conjunction with demon horn necklace. This method negates the need for prayer potions during task. This can also be used with monsters that drop ashes via the use of the attuned ectoplasmator; though it will eat considerable profit due to the cost of ghostly essence.

Holy wrench passively increases the prayer points restored from potions. This includes super prayer, prayer renewal, and super restore potions. The wrench can be worn in the pocket slot to save backpack space.

Aggression potion.png: RS3 Inventory image of Aggression potionaggroverload.png: RS3 Inventory image of aggroverload Aggression potion or

Aggression potion can be used if not using aggroverload to gather up monsters faster and use area of effect abilities in places where monsters are not aggressive or when the player intends to stay for a long period of time. This is recommended for corrupted creatures and soul devourers, who are found in large numbers and can be easily stacked.
Prayer potion.png: RS3 Inventory image of Prayer potionSuper prayer renewal potion.png: RS3 Inventory image of Super prayer renewal potion Prayer restoring potions Potions such as super restore or super prayer renewal are relatively easy to obtain. Therefore standard prayers or Ancient Curses should always be used while maintaining prayer points.

Non-degradable drop cleaners

Apart from the spring cleaner and Underworld Grimoire, all non-degradable drop cleaners in the table below can be added to the tool belt, effectively turning their effects into permanent passives. Learning how to add each to the tool belt costs 500 Slayer points per item.

Notepapers

When an item from backpack is used on magic notepaper or enchanted notepaper, it will instantly convert that item (and any identical items) into notes, thus allowing the items to stack.

Items modifying Slayer assignments

Some items or effects modify your current Slayer assignments while activated. Some monsters can only be damaged while having them assigned as a Slayer assignment, and when players are hunting for their unique drops they may use one or more of these items to get more kills from one assignment. However, when players do not like their current assignment they may want to shorten and use an item to end the assignment sooner.

Temporary boosts

All temporary skill boosts do not enable players to receive a Slayer assignment from a Slayer Master above their level. Despite this limitation, you can still kill the monsters requiring higher Slayer level by boosting while you are on an assignment requiring lower Slayer level, for example killing abyssal savages on an abyssal demon Slayer assignment or demon Slayer assignment, or killing dragonstone dragons on a dragon Slayer assignment.

Ushabti

Ushabti are used to trap the souls of Slayer monsters. They are available after achieving 99 Slayer. The filled ushabti can be taken to the Sunken Pyramid in Menaphos and placed in either the Chest of Souls or in a dungeon hotspot. Assignment summary

This table is not indicative of a monster's weakness or other irrelevant data. This table instead serves as a reference point for optimal task completion. Slayer rates are calculated using recommended equipment and Revolution++.

This table is purely based on maximal xp/hr rate. The actual xp/hr rates will vary based on skill/equipment and how active one is when doing these tasks. Players are suggested to make an informed decision based on which tasks they prefer based on their pros and cons. Some of the faster tasks may be done to get slayer points quickly.

Slayer Codex and Sunken Pyramid

Players with at least level 99 Slayer can fill their Slayer Codex. It is advised to invest slayer points and time to collect at least 100 different monster souls. For every 20 souls collected, slayer helmets grant a +1% gain (up to 5% at 100 souls) to Slayer experience, effectively being an experience boosting item.

In addition to the Slayer Codex, players with at least 99 Slayer have access to a Sunken Pyramid. The following slayer assignments are recommended to fill the three rooms available, or a player can access another player's dungeon if they have a needed room setup.

Assignment Reason Recommended amount of spawns
Muspah Two additional spawns (the Cradle only possesses three somewhat slow spawns). Place in the small room. 5
Ripper Demons With only 1 Ripper Demon, it removes the <35% player's life points aggression mechanic, meaning that no other demons will become aggressive towards the player when health drops below 35%. This also allows for safe use of AoE abilities. A lone ripper demon can also be found just south of the Mage Arena and is quite safe. 1
Crystal Shapeshifters Easier grouping and use of AoE abilities. Place in the small room. 5
Shadow creatures Easier time attacking multiple shadows at once and use of AoE. Best to put Manifest Shadows in your dungeon as they are greater experience/kill than other shadow creatures. Place in the small room. 5
Hydrix dragons Easily AFKable by standing under the spawn point, as the dragon uses relatively weak melee and magic attacks that can be easily healed off of via Soul Split. 1

In addition to the slayer monsters, some Sunken Pyramid rooms benefit from prayer restoring monsters via the use of a Bonecrusher and Demon horn necklace.

Monster Reason Recommended amount of spawns
Mogre 1950 LP, has the least life points but does not aggro even with aggression potion, not good for AFK 2 - 4
Suqah 2650 LP, least life points among aggro options 2 - 4
Sophanem Crocodile 2900 LP, drops only big bones, great for area looting 2 - 4
Hill Giant 3200 LP, good for Champion's Challenge 2 - 4

Alternative methods of gaining experience

Apart from general bonuses, such as Treasure Hunter lamps and stars, special event experience rewards, and Tears of Guthix, the following methods award Slayer XP:

Methods Notes
Phoenix Lair 500 (5,000 for the first completion)
Wild jade vine 2,500 experience every 19 hours.
Daily slayer challenge Equal experience to that of a large XP lamp.
Wilderness Warbands Slaying the warband leader rewards Slayer experience equal to half of that given by the master jack of trades aura (capping at level 99 Slayer) based on your current (unboosted) Slayer level.
Corrupted scarabs Squashing these grants experience equivalent to a small XP lamp divided by five, with the experience per scarab dropping as you proceed. Bursting corrupted scarabs on a daily basis can give significant Slayer experience which adds up over time. The experience and reputation gained from the scarabs scales with the player's level but decreases with the amount of scarabs squished. This decrease resets at 00:00 UTC.
God Statues Each statue grants experience equivalent to a medium XP lamp provided the Slayer experience option is chosen and the fanatic is killed.
Killing Bork Bork may be killed daily after completing the miniquest The Hunt for Surok, granting 1,500 experience, which increases to up to 8,000 after completing the quest The Mighty Fall and completing the hard Varrock achievements.
Killing the Skeletal horror The Skeletal horror may be killed weekly after completing the Rag and Bone Man and Fur 'n Seek wish list. Killing it grants 10,000 experience the first time, and 9,125-15,125 afterwards, depending on your Slayer level.
Player-owned port Complete special experience voyages with the Assassin, Honing her Craft, granting 10,000-35,000 Slayer experience depending upon distances travelled, unlocked regions and how often the Assassin visits the port.
The Arc After unlocking the Assassin in your player-owned port, you can speak to her (Ling) in Aminishi after completing the Impressing the Locals quest to receive contracts. When spoken to, she will give the player Slayer contracts to kill the Acolytes of Seiryu on the island. She can hand out three contracts per day (shared with Sojobo and Hubbub), but this can be increased to up to seven by buying "Contracts per day increase" from Waiko Reward Shop. If you have main island contracts disabled on the board by Sojobo, the game will claim you do not have the requirements for any of Ling's contracts. The Acolytes of Seiryu in the Temple of Aminishi also count towards the contract so it's best if you complete it within there. You can also get Dungeoneering experience and the Elite Dungeon rewards along with the Slayer experience.
Big Game Hunter Successfully hunting a dinosaur on Anachronia will give some Slayer experience depending on the tier of the dinosaur. It also requires at least 75 Hunter.
