The Numbers Behind Recent Releases

The Numbers Behind Recent Releases

Date: 2012-12-06
After the recent spate of new product releases and unveilings, from some of the biggest brand names in the business, I have followed the raw data of how some of the products I've discussed in Tech Talk recently, have actually performed. Well, I have some numbers for you.

Samsung remains the top mobile phone maker with the Galaxy S3 reaching 30million units sold to date. Only having been released in May this year, the S3 reached the 30million mark in November, according to an announcement made on Samsung's Polish Twitter account. Samsung predicted that they would sell more than 30million devices before 2013 and have achieved their target with the holiday season still to come.

The Apple iPhone 5 is also selling faster than imaginable, with 5million devices sold in the first three days, selling more in that period than the 4'S sold in its entire first month. Analysts predict Apple may sell as many as 250 million iPhone 5's, it just goes to show how powerful Apple's marketing and branding is.

Staying with Apple, the iPad Mini boasts sales of up to 2.5million units in the weekend of its release. Out of the 3million iPads sold in the past weekend analysts believe that between 2 and 2.5millon of the devices were iPad Minis. These figures well overshot the estimate of 1million predicted sale figure. The reason for such a high number of sales can possibly be attributed to the low cost of an iPad Mini, which has a base cost of $329 - quite low for a tablet, regardless of brand.

All these figures aside, it seems that Apple and Samsung are performing quite over the expectations of expert analysts, and the lack of a competitive response from previous smartphone giants, is surprising to say the least.
