Women's Month South Africa - Childrens' Rights

Women's Month South Africa - Childrens' Rights

Date: 2013-08-09
One of the most important discussions that women should have this month is about the rights of their children as these relate to parenting and fathers.

Women's Month is after all about growing the power and knowledge of women towards a just and happy society in which families can thrive.

1. Fathers must pay child maintenance. This is the right of the child for maintenance from both parents.

2. Child Support from government grants is there for any child whose parents earn little money but it does not negate child maintenance by the father. Child Support Grant is just that - support to the family and child by government. It is not full maintenance.

3. Access to the child and visitation have nothing to do with whether the father pays maintenance. The child is not a piece of goods that the father pays for to view touch or engage with. It is the child's constitutional right to know both parents and to have a life with both parents. This has nothing to do with money. It has nothing to do with whether the father has a grand house or lives in a room and sleeps on the floor.

4. Only when the court has ruled that the father can not have contact with the child or must have supervised visits such actions can be instituted.

5. Take your child maintenance issues to court. Fight it out there. It has no place in building family relationships between parents and children.

6. Go get this right my sisters. Do not deny your child the father that helped to give them life. Your children have the right to KNOW his or her dad just because they have a dad and it is a normal human thing to have a dad.

7. Love your children and do not tell me how much you love your children and how much you do for them while denying them access to their father and demeaning their self-esteem by making them believe that that their fathers are substandard and not worth knowing. You fell out of love with your husband. The children did not fall out love with their dad. You are robbing them of one of the most important people in their lives and you are robbing them of critical experiences. One day they will make a choice all by themselves about whether they want both of you in their lives.
