Tony Cox's Padkos Tour

Tony Cox's Padkos Tour

Date: 2014-05-16
On achieving his sixth decade this last January and as busy as ever, South African acoustic guitar legend, Tony Cox heads out on the road for a year-long series of shows around SA to promote and perform music from his new album release, Padkos, which he brings to the Catalina Theatre in Wilson's Wharf from May 22 until 1 June.

Padkos is a project quite unlike Cox has ever produced before. Having built his entire career around an original work only ethic, with only one or two rare deviations, Cox decided to do an album almost entirely of covers. But not just any old cover tunes, these are all South African tunes only. Songs and melodies from Cox's life journey that he grew along with and loved and was inspired by, much of it shared by most South Africans from anywhere within our multifaceted culture, all of it performed in the guitar style that has given Cox an almost reverential status in SA and, due to his many travels, a healthy following from well beyond its borders. Without giving too much away, Bright Blue's Weeping is in there, as is Jabulani by P J powers and a stunning, instrumental version of Juluka's Impi.

Says Cox: 'I've been told countless times by folks from around the world, sometimes from very exotic climes, that they often travel listening to my music, a kind of Padkos for the soul if you will...I also took in a lot of SA music on lengthy road trips. On the road, car packed to the rafters with gear; on my way out to yet another destination, another show; always padkos packed nicely, such an important ingredient on any road trip and nothing like scoffing it on the road! The music was always there and I listened broadly to everything SA had to offer and I love so many of these tunes as do most of my fellow Sefricans. One thing I didn't anticipate though, is how emotional they would make some people. I've had several people in tears during this tour! Luckily there are also those who just smile or dance or just want to hug me...somehow the instrumental version of some of these tunes seems to dig deeper where the original didn't go'
