Thanks-giving function of Avon Peaking Power Plant

Thanks-giving function of Avon Peaking Power Plant

Date: 2016-10-28
This week, KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu, applauded investors who have acted to bring the Avon Peaking Power Plant to life.

The completion of this power source is an historic step forward at ensuring that the country sustains sufficient power in its energy grid.

Avon Peaking Power is the biggest independent power plants in Africa, which went commercial in July 2016 and supplies energy to its client, Eskom at peaking times.

Speaking during a thanksgiving function at the Rain Water Lodge in KwaDukuza, mayor Mthembu said the plant has already placed KwaDukuza on the global map.

"It is a great pleasure that today we meet under conditions of peace and happiness. We meet to celebrate today after many trials and tribulations', which threatened the completion of this very important project. We have every reason to celebrate.

We celebrate because this is just one project that demonstrates that the country's policy instruments are geared towards the transformation of the economy, whilst at the same time ensuring that we deliver services to our citizens. The Independent Power Project model initiated by the Department of Energy will indeed be bolstered by the success of this project."

It is clear that we cannot achieve these objectives if the national grid is under strain due to power demand. The provision of alternative sources of energy helps us alleviate the plight of our citizens.

"Some of these resolutions require that we develop our capacity in terms of technological innovation and research and development.

"We are in the process of finalising funding requirements for the amount of R2, 5 million. Council received as part of the agreement that was made at the beginning of the construction of the power plant.

"We remain grateful to the funders for that gesture. We are confident that when we knock at your doors for partnerships with regard to technological solutions and issues that require research, you will keep your doors open in your continued investments in our municipality.

"We express our appreciation to the stakeholders who have moved Avon Peaking Power Plant from a dream to reality. It is a dream-come -true indeed", said Mthembu.

Avon Peaking Power Plant is a private initiative, developed by an Italian Company GDF Suez Consortium, which implements the project on behalf of the National Department of Energy.
