A JOURNEY TO THE JADE SEA

A JOURNEY TO THE JADE SEA

Date: 2014-09-19
The Bugle brings you the first of a series of adventure dispatches taken from the scribbles in North coast adventurer Kingsley Holgate's expedition notebook:

The new objective is clear; it's to further explore the world's largest desert lake deep in the wilds of Northern Kenyan's Great African Rift valley. A highlight of the journey will be to attend The Lake Turkana cultural Festival where the 10 ethnic groups of the Lake Turkana region; El Molo, Rendille, Samburu, Turkana, Dassanach, Gabbra, Borana, Konso, Wata and Burji will use song and dance to demonstrate their unique differences and traditions. In this remote and forgotten region; we will be also made aware of the challenges faced by these minority tribes and the importance of using song and dance to promote peace amongst the warring factions that have been killing each other over land and cattle.

People tell us we must be crazy, too dangerous, what about all the Al Shabaab activity in the north.

But we remain committed having spent much of a lifetime adventuring in every country in Africa including her island states. We are keenly aware of the rapidly changing face of 'Mama Africa'. Chinese built roads and motorbikes, the race for Africa's raw materials, mining and oil, cell phones, everything's changing. So whilst Africa still remains one of the last great frontiers of adventure, this Land Rover expedition will be part of a series of once-off journeys to record, photograph and participate in what could be some of the last of Africa's Great Living Traditions.
