Travel - Mauritius Our Treasure Island

In the next couple of weeks we will be bring you our travel and investment features, which we collected on our two week break in Mauritius. Where to go? What to eat? And who to meet?

We will share with you our experiences of this magical paradise island and help you find places away from the resorts and hotels, introducing a new way to travel.

No more expensive hotels with outrageous drink menus, no more astronomical restaurant bills, no wasteful extravagance. Ok, I lie, some extravagance because we live once and after all we deserve a little opulence in our lives.

We will share with you how to travel to Mauritius on a budget and still live like kings.

But do not worryif it is resorts you are after, we have that too. From the most expensive, and exclusive to the funky Cosmopolitan, urban style boutique hotels.

What can I saywe were busy, but we loved every moment of it and coming back was the hardest thing we had to do in a long, long time. Mauritius is our number one travel destination at the moment, just four hours away, it is also one of the most convenient.

There is something about going on an adventure that is so good for the soul. Good for more than just the mental well-being but also good for the spiritual balance.

Over the years we have adventured through the hard times and come out somewhere in the space of eternal bliss.

Being stuck in the rut of all work and no play is the worst place to be.

Staying inspired is a doing thing, believe us, we know all about it.

After months of hard work and determination to keep the fires burning, the time to alter our consciousness arrives and there is not much to do but pack our bags and fly away to an exotic island. Lie by the poolside and drink Pina Coladas and reboot our hard drives.

Without exception, as a species, we continuously seek out situations that will enrich us and make us stand up to any adversity.

Our latest adventures allowed us the privilege to share two weeks with awesome individuals. Fourteen days spent adventuring through paradise and the inhabitants of this charmed space, it is no wonder we came back with renewed energies. Energies that can propel us to be better people and do better because we have been inspired.

The island of Mauritius is truly a mystical place. It is renowned for its beautiful sandy beachesits warm and friendly people and their inspirational spiritual mind-set. Wherever you go, you find smiley faces and warm hospitality.

Here Muslim, Hindu and Christians live side by side. Sharing their devotion with anyone who is willing to listen and spreading positive vibes to all.

Having travelled the Island of Mauritius before we knew what to expect, however this time around there were a lot of positive changes and where before we spent a lot of our time in the luxurious confines of our resort, this time we took to the streets, villages and markets and really got a feel for the people and their amazing island lifestyle.

"No problem." Has been the catch phrase of Mauritius for many years and the attitude of most of the island people we met embodied this life attitude.

We arrived at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the brand new passenger terminal for Air Mauritius. It is a modern wonder and is so efficient and passenger friendly, it was an absolute pleasure compared to the old airport.

Everything you need as a tourist is right there as you pass through passport control. From tour operators to taxi drivers, eager to get you to your hotel or guesthouse. We negotiated a better rate, as one does, and soon were enjoying the cool breeze blowing through the open window. Ali, our taxi driver was soon renamed to Taxi Ali, he was so friendly and fully conversant in English, offering such gems of tour guide wisdom even Wikipedia would not have known.

Our four-hour flight was not even tiring, Air Mauritius were so professional and on time we arrived fresh and ready to take in all the sights, sounds and smells of the island. The trademark hibiscus flowers seemed to be everywhere, even on the walls and shorts of the locals.

We headed to the West coast to our first place of residence, a wonderful private villa in a place called Flic en Flac. This was to be our home for the next few days. A predominantly tourist orientated beach town with everything from scooter hire to money changers, cell phone service providers and fresh fruit and veg outlets.

There were dive operators and tourist boat excursions on offer. As we turned the corner on our morning walk back from the beach, we encountered a Spar.

Suffice to say at this stage that we discovered some real gems on the island and some places that will have you thinking and behaving like an islander in a matter of a few days.

The Acacia trees provided much needed shade from the blistering hot sun as the distant sound of the surf crashing into the coral reef provided a backtrack to the whistles and shouts of everyday island life.

We discovered Tidez coffee shop just across from the beach parking lot, which provided us with perfect French baguette and exceptional espresso coffees. The gorgeous ladies behind the counter were only too happy to part with the baguettes and we became regulars that day.

The main beach in Flic en Flac is a lagoon with the crystal clear water that the travel brochures boast about and the white coral beach can become a little too hot for bare feet.

Flic en Flac offers a range of places to stay and the night life is varied, when the cool evening breeze makes going without air conditioning a little more possible, you will find a selection of nationalities taking in a cold Phoenix or a chilled Tequila sunset.

Oh how we miss it already.
