Dinghy Class Champs and Jockey Commodore Series

Dinghy Class Champs and Jockey Commodore Series

Date: 2015-02-20

A blustery weekend made for some interesting conditions for Durban's Point Yacht Club sailors this weekend.

Sunday saw the start of the Jockey Commodore Series incorporating the Hobiecat Grand Prix with race officer, Ron Pet setting a windward leeward course offshore of Addington Beach. The course had a bit of a twist for the keelboats, the bigger boats needed to pass through a set of gates in the middle of the course on both the run and the beat as they made their way to the outer marks.

The first race started as a squall moved across the water and the winds picked up substantially but settled to around 17knots with gusts nearing the 20knots. Only two keelboats started the first race and 18 Hobies braved the conditions. The Rear Commodore for Keelers for the Point Yacht Club, Jon Marshall got off to a good start but on his first beat up to the top mark, he forgot to go through the gates, disqualifying him from the first race.

For all the yachties who love dinghy sailing, the conclusion for the Dinghy Class Champs was due to take place in the harbour on Valentine's Day. A small fleet of passionate chaps arrived together with a stiff breeze that registered over 20knots and continued to rise.

After careful consideration and negations with the more senior members of the fleet, race officer, Kevin Bingham abandoned racing and postponed the final days racing to the end of the month.

This coming weekend, Durbans entire sailing community head up to the Henley Midmar Yacht Club for the annual endurance 9 Hour Race that takes place on Saturday.
