Kwadukuza Municipality Builds Indoor Combo Court For Nkobongo

Date: 2018-08-31

The KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender, presided over the Handover Ceremony of the Ward 08 state of the art Indoor Combo Court billed at R1,2 million on Saturday,18 August 2018.

Though situated in Ward 08 this facility will also be used by surrounding communities, it has been built to accommodate a variety of sporting codes which includes Netball, Basketball and Volleyball.

Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Mayor shared these words with the community in attendance "Sports plays huge role in bringing communities together, having a social and cultural impact, developing social capital and reducing crime and anti-social behavior. Regular involvement in sport can benefit individuals and communities. Let us use this facility to achieve just that."

Chairperson of the Youth, Sports and Gender portfolio Councillor John Phahla motivated that the community plays a central role to safeguarding this infrastructure and also encourage the youth to participate in sport as it is an alternative employement space that is not yet explioted.

"I would like to tread on Mayor Ricardo Mthembu's words that sport is one area that will assist us to mould our youth outside of the life highly embroiled with substance and drug abuse. We must therefore not be rhetorical in our support to assist young men and women who have chosen a healthy life that will see them become professionals in their own right as well as be able to provide for their families, because professional sportsmen get paid," added Phahla.

KwaDukuza Municipality is based on the premise that sport plays a vital role in bringing communities together as well as acts as a critical catalyst to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.
