Local Artist's sacred landscapes

Local Artist's sacred landscapes

Author: Kasia Yoko

Alison Cockburn is one of KZN's most successful emerging artists; she is gorgeous, creative and possesses some pretty impressive business savvy. However, art was something she never really planned as a future career, for many years Ali lived a different life running her own successful international marketing and PR business.

We met in Alison's magnificent beachfront home, we were literally hanging on the edge of Ballito's main beach, the views are jaw dropping and majestic and suddenly I understood where her inspiration originates from.

"I always acknowledged my artistic talent but it took me a while to follow my creative thread." Alison told The Bugle, "It was while going through a life changing experience that it presented itself to me and I went along with it."

Alison has a real talent in combining colours and developing images that are not just beautiful to look at but also thought provoking and authentic. Her technique is a secret that Alison refuses to divulge, and for good reason, her paintings are being snapped up by discerning art lovers, and she has even had a few international investors buying her work.

With their beautiful colours and their smooth and poetic composition it is no wonder that many of Alison's canvasses have found homes in Cape Town, Johannesburg and as far afield as Seattle in New York, USA.

As Christmas approaches why not give your loved one an investment for life. Did you know that in times of high and rising inflation, art has performed historically well across all market sectors. Typically when there is an uncertain market, collectors look to purchase art with an investment view, not just to purchase beautiful objects. According to the Deloitte Luxembourg & ArtTactic Art & Finance Report 2016, 73% of wealth managers in 2016 (up from 58% in 2014) said their clients wanted to include art and other collectible assets in their wealth reports, in order to have a consolidated view of their wealth. Also, in the 2016 report, 78% of wealth managers (up from 55% in 2014) said that they thought art and collectibles should be included as part of a wealth management offering.

When you engage with one of Allison's canvasses, they seem to draw you in, revealing one insight after another, exposing emotions and feelings layered in mystique and complexity. Serendipity is a big influence in Allison's creative process and each piece is totally unique and cannot be recreated. The more you stare into the canvas the more it reveals itself to you, mesmerising and beguiling, each creation generates a different emotive reaction from viewer and its presence in a room cannot go unnoticed.
