A Gift from Switzerland

A Gift from Switzerland

Date: 2018-06-01

Fourteen years ago, Jenni Wallace, wife of the pastor at the then Church of the Good Shepherd (affectionately known as COGS and now as "Anthem") in Durban North, was distressed at the stories of abandoned and orphaned children in our country.

She determined to open a transition home for these helpless little people where they could be loved and nurtured before being placed with their adoptive families. "Fair Havens" has since then become one of the seven programmes operated by The Domino Foundation and has seen almost 140 babies and toddlers moving to their "forever" homes locally and overseas.

Jenni and her husband now live in Switzerland, leading a church in Zug, where they have found that poor and disadvantaged people are very rare. This means that there is nowhere for used clothing to go and instead it is sent for recycling.

Never slow to seize the moment, Jenni saw an opportunity and opened "Love on a Hanger", a chic boutique in the affluent picture postcard Swiss town where quality pre-owned clothing is donated by the ladies of Zug and sold to raise funds for deserving charities.

On a recent trip to Durban and with her heart firmly linked to "Fair Havens", Jenni brought the proceeds of some of the sales to the babies' home in Durban North. She presented a cheque for some R64 000 to Sandy Hamblin, leader of The Domino Foundation's Babies' Home programme and House Mother, Precious Thabete.

More information on the Babies' Home programme and The Domino Foundation's other programmes can be got by contacting Sandy on 031 - 563 9605/[email protected].
