Mayor hails progress in the delivery of decent homes

Date: 2014-04-25
KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has hailed progress in the packaging of decent human settlements in KwaDukuza.

Mthembu said that KwaDukuza is moving forward with speed after welcoming the first 24 beneficiaries in governments improved housing rental stock, the Integrated Residential Development Units in Rocky Park, KwaDukuza.

The first uptake is being drawn from a total of 776 units. A number of these units are still on construction stage.

The project is being piloted by the KwaZulu Natal Department of Human Settlements and is part of government's undertaking to provide low income citizens with decent settlements. The priorities set by government are a result of this massive project, said Mthembu. 'We are indeed moving forward with speed, looking at the pace of housing delivery in our area. We have expressed time and again, our approach in developing decent human settlements.

Locally, this clearly indicates the commitments we made following our 2012 Human Settlements Summit which again serves to underline our approach to priorities that have been mapped out by national government,' he said. The units are located on prime areas as part of cutting down on transport costs to benefit residents who migrate to KwaDukuza's urban economy. Last year, the department launched its fifteen year Housing Rental Strategy in the interest of mapping out reasonable rental methods to cater for people from different walks of life.

Mthembu earlier this month joined the people in the rural community of Thembeni, to deliver 1980 RDP homes. He re-assured that the delivery will continue in leaps and bounds with plans afoot for sustainable settlements.
