Dr Sadhana Manik is the winner

Date: 2018-03-16

Karate South Africa held their senior national championships at the Portuguese Hall in Pretoria on the 2-3 March 2018. Dr Sadhana Manik, a local Umdloti resident, senior lecturer at UKZN and mum of local well-known Umdloti surfer Wazir Surajlall, represented the province of KwaZulu-Natal at this prestigious event in the female masters (50 years and older) kata division.

Sadhana did the province proud when she was placed first. She is a second dan black belt and has been a karateka for more than 25 years.

Her husband, Verulam businessman Rookesh Surajlall is a third dan karateka and it is evident that she comes from a family committed to maintaining a balanced lifestyle and believes that academia, sport and spirituality are essential components of a healthy and satisfying lifestyle.

Their style of karate is Shitoryu and she represents the club Nikki-Ha Shitoryu, which is affiliated to Inoue-Ha Shitoryu Karate (well known internationally for winning numerous world kata events). Kyoshi Nikki Pillay of Australia (an ex-South African) is the head of style with the main dojo being at the Mt. View Civic Centre in Verulam .

Sadhana is trained locally by veteran Senseis Viren Gosai and Rodney Nair who also participate in competitions. Training is held in Verulam on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 17h30-18h30 for children and thereafter to 19h30 for adults. Training is also held on Saturdays between 8h30-10h00 in Garden Street, Verulam.
