Ashton Matrics Celebrate at Valedictory

Date: 2015-10-23
With a few days before writing their final examinations, and a celebration of their school career achievements, Ashton matriculants had their Valedictory function on Friday 16 October.

The matriculants have a busy time ahead as they prepare for their final IEB examinations, as well as the Cambridge International Examinations on both A and AS level. "The students produced an outstanding set of results following their trial examinations and we are looking forward to excellent results all round," said Mr Joe Erasmus, Executive Head.

"We are also extremely proud of the fact that these are the first matrics who will write the Cambridge AS and A Level Examinations," he added. At the Valedictory Awards function held on Friday in the Grace Hall, Zarah Morgan clinched the outstanding Achiever Award for Cambridge AS Level, Ananya Musib was the Cambridge A Level DUX with an average of 86% with Anika Botha being the Proxime Accessit with 82%. But, it was Christine Brokensha who received a standing ovation from the 900 people in the Grace Hall, clinching top honours of IEB DUX, with 7 distinctions and an average of 94,2%.

Christine was awarded the first ever Academic Cum Laude white blazer for achieving an average of 90% and above from Grade 8 through to Grade 12. She boasted 94% for Accounting, 99% for Business Studies, 95% for History, 99% for Mathematics, 94% for Life Orientation and 93% for English, 88% for Afrikaans. Alwyn Small, 2015 Head Boy was Proxime Accessit with 90% average. In third place was Justin Schruer. Christine also scooped the Outstanding Achievement Award with 99% for Mathematics and 94% for Accounting. Five IEB students were awarded Academic School Honours for an average above 80% while five Cambridge students received Academic School Honours for an average above 75% (A Levels and 80% AS Level). This is calculated for the year including the trial examination results, and six students received full colours for an average between 75% and 79%. In addition to celebrating the excellence in academics, excellence in sport and culture was also recognised.

Justin Schruer and Brandon Bruwer shared the Sportsman of the Year trophy and Megan Bates was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year. While Ashton's sport has grown in leaps and bounds, cultural activities have not taken a back seat, and Fabienne leLeux was awarded the Monique Venter Trophy for contributing towards the continuous growth of Culture at the school and the contribution to growth in Music was awarded to Rosalita de Agrela. The Good-fellowship award, as voted for by the matric students for matric student who was a role model to his peers and being a leader, and always upheld Ashton's name, was awarded to Brandon Bruwer. The All Souls' Award for consistent service to the School, in the classroom and in all other areas of school life was awarded to Megan Bates.

The results of the IEB Matric examinations will be released on 30 December 2015, and the Cambridge results are expected on 2 January 2016.
