Durban arts entrepreneurs MADE (Mzansi Arts Development) are opening an arts institute to be based at the Diakonia Centre in the inner city, to teach music skills and dance instruction to encourage live arts practitioners to have the qualifications to formalise their passion and become more employable.

"With ever increasing unemployment, we are aware of the need to nurture arts entrepreneurs who can become self-employed, quality for formal jobs and ultimately employ others," explains MADE's Lerato Molemong. "We want to support arts practioners by offering an achievable formal qualification to help them on the career path. We understand the gap in the arts-education market to be bridging experience and passion, with affordable and achievable formal qualifications which are recognised and respected among employers."

"The qualifications which we offer are The Further Education and Training Certificate in Music (SAQA ID: 65029) which comprises of 26 modules with 157 credits to attain a qualification in music. It is a NQF level 4, Full Qualification with duration of one year (full - time). The attainment of the Further Education and Training Certificate in Dance Instruction Qualification (SAQA ID: 79986) consists of 23 modules for the completion of the qualifications totaling to a minimum of 143 credits. It is a NQF level 4, Full Qualification with duration of one year (full - time).

"We will be offering short courses as well which are unit standards that form part of the qualifications. Short courses that will be our main focus are Music Business, Ethics and Professionalism in the Music Industry, Starting a Business Venture, Arts Administration, Creating Original Performance, Directing a Production, Stage Management and Adjudicating a Dance Performance.

The training venue is the beautiful Diakonia Centre - the multi-purpose hub in the heart of the city, favoured by tenants working in the social justice, faith and NGO space, and home to Diakonia Council of Churches the interchurch agency working for a more just society.
