SAPF Durban North Observes National Police Day

SAPF Durban North Observes National Police Day

Date: 2014-01-31
This Monday is National Police Day and Communications Officer Warrant Officer Valery Govender has set up a full display at Gateway Shopping Centre. This is a yearly event and she aims to make the community aware of the various roles that the police play.

The SAPS comprises of many different sections and the community are not up to date with the many types of services they render. Bold and visible charts have been set up.  They are self explanatory and easy to understand with well-illustrated pictures.

Career materials have also be laid out for prospective students who wish to pursue a career in the SAPF. There is more than meets the eye as far as the SAPS is concerned. Crime awareness hints on various topics such as Hijacking, Child Abuse, Firearm Safety, Renewal of Firearm Licences, Emergency Numbers etc. will be on display, which is of benefit to the community. A PA System is used to address the community on safety issues, such as hot spots in the area etc. warnings and advice will also be given.

Officer Valery Govender is thankful to the management of Gateway for opening the doors for a community awareness day. Likewise various other organisations and businesses can also come on board as the concept of community policing is one of partnership.

Security Manager of Gateway Mr Eddie Stamps commented, "The police display and help desk is always welcomed by the community.  The community enjoys the police presence. Shoppers experienced a shopping day with a difference." He said.

Officer Valery Govender commented that various queries were attended to with regards to vagrants in the area, renewal of licences, women queried the Domestic Violence Act, while some children wanted to discuss the Child Protection Act.

This was also a good opportunity to pay tribute to police officers who risked their lives in the line of duty.

Every member in the Durban North SAPS observed the National Police Day with pride as we hosted a function outside the station by our memorial wall.

Station Commander Colonel G M Naidoo commented, "It is up to each police officer to constantly uphold the law, portray a positive image of the SAPS and to regularly reaffirm their commitment to serving our community," he said.
